双语剧本[Scene: Monica and Rachel's, they're all hanging out in the living room.]

Monica: You should feel great about yourself! You're doing this amazing independence thing!

Rachel: Monica, what is so amazing? I gave up, like, everything. And for what?

Rachel: Okay, but Pheebs, Pheebs, Jack gave up a cow, I gave up an orthodontist. Okay, I-I-I know, I know I didn't love him
好吧，不过Pheebs ，Jack放弃了一头牛，我放弃的是一名牙医，好吗，我，我，我知道，我知道我不爱他。

Phoebe: Oh, see, Jack did love the cow.
哦，看看， Jack可是爱那头牛的。

Rachel: But see, it was a plan. Y'know, it was clear. Everything was figured out, and now everything's just kinda like...
但看看，我那是人生规划。你知道，一切都非常清楚，都算好了的，但现在一切都……

Phoebe: Floopy?
模糊了？

Rachel: Yeah.
就是。

Monica: So what, you're not the only one. I mean, half the time we don't know where we're going. You've just gotta figure at some point it's all gonna come together, and it's just gonna be... unfloopy.

Jack and the Beanstalk: Rachel后悔自己离家出走，Phoebe则用《杰克和豆茎(Jack and the Beanstalk)》的故事劝慰她。这是著名的西方童话：杰克用一头牛换了三颗魔豆，妈妈生气地将魔豆扔出窗外，第二天豆茎长得高入云霄，杰克爬上魔豆，从巨人那里偷走了金币和会下金蛋的母鸡。Phoebe 的用意是告诉Rachel，虽然你放弃了牛，但你得到了生活的魔豆。

what if we don't get magic beans? I mean, what if all we've got are beans?

What if…?的三种用法

一、表示假设

what if 用于提出假设时，意思是假若……假若……怎么办要是……将会怎么样，其后句子可用陈述语气（用一般现在时），也可用虚拟语气（用一般过去时或should+动词原形）。如：

What if she finds out that you've lost her book? 如果她发现你把她的书丢了怎么办?

But what if somebody decides to break the rules? 但是如果有人决定打破这些规则呢？

What if it rains when we can't get under shelter? 假若下起雨来，我们又没处避雨可怎么办?

从句用虚拟语气时，若是针对过去情况，从句则用过去完成时。如：

What if no one had been there? 假如没有人去过那里的话，会怎么样?

二、表示邀请或建议

What if…表示邀请或建议时，意思是如果……怎么样？如果……如何？。如：

What if you join us for lunch? 同我们一起吃午饭怎么样？

What if we moved the sofa over here? Would that look better? 要是我们把沙发挪到这边来会怎么样？看上去会不会好一些？

三、表示不重要

此时通常常与so连用，意为就算……那又怎样？如：

So what if we're a little late? 就算我们迟到一会儿那又怎样？

So what if nobody else agrees with me? 就算没有一个人赞成我的意见，那又怎么样？

注：若句意清楚，so what if…有时可省略成so what? 如：

A：I'm afraid it's too expensive. 恐怕太贵了。

B：So what? We've plenty of money. 那有什么关系? 我们有的是钱。
