According to photos uploaded by netizens, Buddhist memorial tablets of convicted war criminals,
including Matsui Iwane, Hisao Tani, as well as Takeshi Noda and Tanaka Junyoshi, were honored at the temple from 2018 to 2022.
The Nanjing Xuanwu district Bureau of Ethnic and Religious Affairs said it was investigating the case with the Public Security Bureau.
Their preliminary investigation found the temple learned of the incident in February and had corrected the misconduct.
The PSB said it will thoroughly investigate the case, especially since it hurts the feelings of Chinese people, adding the result of the investigation will be made public.
The abbot of the temple was dismissed, and the temple was required to close.
At least three officials from the religious departments were punished, including the chief of Xuanwu district Bureau of Ethnic and Religious Affairs.
The Memorial Hall of The Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders said today that Chinese people must always remember the serious crimes committed by the invaders.
The Memorial Hall added that it looked forward to a thorough investigation.
The temple is about a 30-minute drive from The Memorial Hall.
