【词义辨析】
1.but, however, still, yet, nevertheless, while, whereas
这些连词或副词均含“但是，可是，然而，而”之意。
but口语常用词，语气较强，泛指与前述情况相反。
however表转折关系，语气稍弱于but，连接性也弱一些，因而常作插入语。
still语气强，多用于肯定句或疑问句。指尽管作出让步，采取措施或表示反对，但情况仍然如故，无所改变。
yet常用于否定句，语气比still稍强。指不管作出多大努力或让步，仍达不到预期的结果。
nevertheless指尽管作出完全让步，也不会发生任何影响。
while表对比，一般可与whereas换用，但程度弱一些。
whereas表对比，一般可与while互换。
2.quiet, calm, silent, still, noiseless, peaceful, serene
这些形容词均含“平静的，无声无息”之意。
quiet普通用词，指没有喧闹、活动或骚乱的寂静状态。
calm普通用词，既可指天气、海洋等的平静状态，又可指人的镇定沉着、不慌乱，不受外界影响和情绪支配。
silent普通用词，指缄默不语或无声无息。
still指平静而又安定的状态。
noiseless指无任何噪音或不出声，无声无息。
peaceful普通用词，指一种不受外物扰乱和刺激的内在宁静或和平状态。
serene（诗）纯静，清朗。
3.still, yet
这两个副词均含有“仍，还”之意。
still指过去已经开始的动作，说话时仍在继续，可用于肯定、否定或疑问句中。
yet通常用于疑问句和否定句中，指预料要发生的事，但尚未发生。
【例句用法】
Although she felt ill, she still went to work.
她虽然觉得身体不舒服，但仍然去上班了。
The fish is still alive.
这条鱼仍活着。
The room was still at the end of the speech.
演讲结束的时候，房间里寂静无声。
The food stilled the baby's cries.
