Harbin, the capital of China's Heilongjiang Province, is nicknamed the "Ice City." But in this cold northern town, all the 25-year-old Russian single mom Elena Sibileva can feel is warmth.
Elena gave birth to little Daria a year ago in Russia. Due to a lack of oxygen during labor, the girl developed cerebral palsy. Treatment in Moscow has been ineffective. Hearing about good recovery hospitals in Harbin, Elena quit her job, and traveled across some 600 kilometers to China.
"I felt very helpless after I arrived in Harbin. I didn't know anyone, and can't speak Chinese. I didn't even know where to buy baby products for my daughter. But now life had become much easier, because I've found a second mom."
Qi says she can empathize with Elena. So she told her family about the single mom, and the whole family decided to help her out. "We helped her cook meals, and my sister drove the car, bring her out to buy daily necessities. We think both the little girl and the mom need help, and we want to do all we can do for her."
Qi says Elena told her she misses her hometown, but she also feels she now has a second home in China. Because for her, the city and the people there give her the warmth of family and a glimmer of hope to help her live.
