The following week dragged by.

【语法用法】
appear为不及物动词，
I have read the article on Japanese economy appeared in yesterday's paper.
我在昨天出版的报纸上读了和日本经济相关的文章。
应在appeared前加that/which，否则表述不正确。
appear同seem的比较：
appear做连接动词时，常指“事情或事物看其来怎么样”，同seem相似。
He appears (to be) very angry today.（句中的to be可省略）
She appears to have enough money to live on.
与seem不同的是，seem既可以用来讨论客观事实，也可以用来描述主观的印象或感觉，而appear只能表达客观事实。
The baby seems/appears (to be) hungry.（两者都可用）
She doesn't want to go on studying. It seems a pity.（只能用seem）
当appear指“出现”或“抵达”时，可被副词修饰。
She suddenly appeared in the doorway.
她突然间出现在门口。
【词义辨析】
appear, emerge, show, loom
这些动词均有“出现”之意。
appear强调公开露面，被看见。
emerge侧重缓缓出现的过程。
show语气较强，强调“露出来”。
loom指朦胧出现，好像从雾中浮现出来一样。

这些动词均有“看起来，好像是”之意。
appear指从感观印象看似乎是如此，但有时着重指因视野、观点限制而产生的歪曲印象。

【语法用法】
marks for后加subject，常用来表示“某科的分数”。
She gained high marks for English.
她在英文科目上得了高分。
mark可单独表示“分数”。
The paper carries 100 marks.
这份试卷共计100分。
mark还可表示为“商标”，如the mark on the goods（产品上的商标），而make指“商品的牌子”，要注意两者的区别。
【错句举例与错句分析】
错句: When it comes to shoes, I wouldn't buy any other mark.
订正: When it comes to shoes, I wouldn't buy any other make.
翻译: 说到鞋子的话，我不会买其它牌子的。
