Although both North and South bore ancient grudges against each other slavery was the core of the problem.

The Northern states were basically anti-slavery but not so much so that they actually wanted to free the slaves.

Meanwhile, the Southern states saw the national anti-slavery movement as a threat as against their states rights, neither side was willing to compromise.

The first consequence in early 1861 was the creation of the confederate states of America;
