On the eve of the Spanish American war a naval squad under Commodore Dewey suddenly appeared （amazing） off the coast of the Philippines.

On may 1st 1898 Dewey's squadron demolished both the Spanish fleet and the shore batteries at Manila

however Dewey had to be careful about capturing Manila, the US did not want the native Filipinos taking the city from the Spanish

because then they might set up their own country instead the Spanish surrendered to the Americans on August 14th 1898.
