清·和邦额《夜谭随录》中有个成语叫做结舌瞪目。结舌瞪目中的瞪目就是瞪着眼睛；结舌则是不敢说话。瞪眼结舌说不出话来就是形容非常窘迫或惊呆的样子。先秦·孟轲《孟子·尽心下》有个成语叫做茅塞顿开。茅塞顿开中的茅是指茅草；塞是指堵塞；顿意为顿时。茅塞顿开这个成语原意为心里好像有茅草堵着，现在忽然被打开了。形容闭塞的思路，由于得到了某种事物的启发，豁然开朗，明白了事物的内在含义。唐·李商隐《为汝南公华州贺赦表》有个成语叫做没齿难忘。没齿难忘中的齿是指年龄；没齿意为终身。没齿难忘这个成语意思就是一辈子也忘不了，形容印象非常深刻。

那么，结舌瞪目，茅塞顿开和没齿难忘这三个成语的意思在美语中用一个短语就可以表达出来。它是什么呢？我们就带着这个问题进入到今天的地道美语的话聊室中来。

我们先来听三个句子：

1. In a flash the evil intent of the vice-president usurping power hit the president right between the eyes.

2. Let us suppose that Mary hit John right between the eyes, what will he do? It's no doubt he wants to spend all his time with her and get to know about her better.

3. Mr. Monotone hit me right between the eyes with that shot,but I don't know about the other dozen people in the audience.

这三个句子中都有一个共同的短语是hit sb right between the eyes，毫无疑问我们的疑问就hit us right between the eyes（茅塞顿开了）。

下面我们来看一下刚才的三个句子:

1. In a flash the evil intent of the vice-president usurping power hit the president right between the eyes. 一刹那间，副总统篡权的罪恶意图给总统当头一棒。

In this sentence, "hit sb right between the eyes" means "to give sb a big suprise". 这句话中hit sb right between the eyes意思是让某人非常吃惊。这也就是结舌瞪目的意思。
