This morning, I'd like to talk about a new sentence pattern which is : S suppose (that) S did. 这个句式表达的意思是假设，设想某人做某事。In this sentence " suppose " means " to pretend that something is true or imagine what would happen if something were true". From it's English explanation, we can see that subjunctive should be used in an objective clause that follows it.

从其英文解释中，我们就可以说看出该句式表达出来的是某人纯然的一种假想，与现实是不一致的，suppose后面跟的宾语从句中要使用虚拟语气。“That S did.”是由that引导的宾语从句，我们可以看到其谓语形式是did，使用动词的一般过去式。由此可知，这就是这个句式的虚拟语气的体现形式，而且可以知道这个句式是表示对现在或是将来的情况的一种假设，设想。

【视野拓展】

如果是表示对发生过了的事情进行假设，设想，其谓语形式是had done. So , we have another sentence pattern : S suppose (that) S had done. That can be left out. That 可以省略。

【例句】

1 Suppose her father turned her out of door, what would she take?
设想她的父亲把他撵出家门，她会是怎样的反应呢？

2 Suppose they didn't believe him, what would they do to him.
假如他们不相信他的话，他们会对他怎样呢？

【特殊例句】

但是在牛津词典中，出现的例句中是不用虚拟语气的。

1 Suppose that flights are fully booked on that day, which other day could we go?
假定那天的航班都订满了，我们还可以在哪天走呢？

2 Let us suppose , for example, that you are married with two children, what kind of job for a living would you choose?
比方说，假设你成家了，还有2个孩子，因生存你选择什么工种呢？

3 Suppose he is dead—— what then?

假如他死了，那怎么办呢？

由此可见，凡含有宾语从句的复合句中的主句中含有suppose这个词，作为“假设，设想，假定”这类意思的话，后面跟的宾语从句可以使用虚拟语气，也可以不使用虚拟语气。
