The maker of a popular "selfie makeover" mobile app that lets users turn themselves into supermodels could soon give the Hong Kong stock exchange a facelift. Meitu Inc., a smartphone and app developer based in the eastern city of Xiamen, filed an application with the Hong Kong exchange for an initial public offering on August 20. The company hopes to raise between US$ 500 million and 1 billion through a listing on the exchange, which will likely happen in the fourth quarter of this year, insiders said.

The IPO could be the world's second-largest tech IPO this year after the Japanese communication app Line, according to the Wall Street Journal. But tech firms, including Chinese app giant Tencent, accounted for only 10 percent of the Hong Kong exchange's total market capitalization at the end of July. A successful IPO for Meitu, which was valued at US$ 3.8 billion after a round of fundraising this year, could make Hong Kong more attractive as a listing location.

Meitu has been in the beautification business since 2008, when founder Cai Wensheng launched online photo editing service MeituPic. MeituPic boasts over 500 million users as of October 2015, according to Meitu's website. Cai launched BeautyCam, an app aimed at selfies, in 2013. BeautyCam users can chase Chinese beauty standards by widening their eyes, erasing blemishes and even lightening their skin.

Unless Meitu can brush up on its fundraising savvy, its IPO dreams could prove too beautiful to be true.
