Aviator Charles A. Lindbergh completes the first non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

He lands near Paris in the "Spirit of St. Louis". Some 33 hours after taking off from New York’s Long Island.

1924, in Chicago, 2 wealthy University students Nathan Leopold Junior and Richard Loeb kidnap and murder 14-year-old Bobby Franks in what they call a "thrill killing". Leopold Junior and Loeb who the first non-stop solo flight get life in prison instead of the death penalty after lawyer Clarence Darrow defenced them as their trial.

1881, Clara Barton founds the American Red Cross, serving as the first President of the US branch of world-wide humanitarian agency.

1999, “Thank you so very much. I truly never believe that this would happen.”

After 18 failed tries in a roll. Susan Lucci, star of the ABC soap opera “All My Children” finally wins a Daytime Emmy for best actress.

And 1959, in New York, the musical "Gypsy," star in Ethel Merman, opens on Broadway.
