歌手简介

The Accra Mall is not used to small visitor turnouts. Theirs is a perfect description of the word, 'mammoth' on any day. Be it during the tight busy schedules and rush hour Accra is used to on weekdays or the activity filled weekends that almost take the whole capital by storm, the location attracts a colossal number of the city's upwardly mobile community.

Not even, the energy-sapping and time consuming traffic situation on the Spintex Road discourages the many people who desire to hang out at what is touted to be Ghana's answer to Harrods.

After the trail blazed by Ayigbe Edem as the first local artiste to have an autograph signing session at the mall, the likes of Sarkodie and Mimi followed in that order as musicians who found the location a perfect deviation from the usual theatres to launch their “latest”.

So when popular television and radio presenter, Jon Germain decided to choose the venue, specifically the Silverbird Lifestyle Store for the launch of his “This is who I am album”, he certainly was expecting loyal fans of his to 'storm' the venue, all in solidarity with a brother they so much love and adore but do not get the chance to see except to hear his voice on radio or tune in to the 'Allo Tigo' show on Metro TV every Saturday evening.

They did come in their numbers as by the advertised time of 3:00pm, the entrance of the Lifestyle Store was occupied by a cross section of loyalists. Jon is a fine gentleman, and he knows his large fan base includes ladies from across the divide of the social strata, most of who couldn't believe their eyes that at long last they got the chance to have a feel of their superstar. Choosing an interactive rather than a laid back approach helped Jon a great deal as patrons had their copies autographed and also a chance to interact with 'the Supremo'.

At a point, it was becoming a bit difficult controlling the crowd. Understandably so, because Jon is huge, at least in local circles, and for an album that had much noise made about it on almost every medium in the capital, was sure going to get him that huge turnout.

Maybe the title of the album did the trick for Jon. As he explained to The Mail, what went into that choice, a female fan interrupted midway trying to pose for a photo opportunity with him – a once in a lifetime opening! “This is who I am”, he told The Mail “because music is me, that's all I live for. My songs are all based on emotions, past relationships, hard times, the shocking passing away of my father and the women I loved”.

'This Is Who I am' has been on Jon's cards for the past 16 years. The song talks about the effusions of a young man who cannot get over his ex-lover, who's finally found someone who loves her the way she deserves to. The album is a mixed breed of pop and rock music with delicate traces of tempo despondency.

Jon's seminal years as a musician were shaped by listening to a lot of pop, rock and R&B songs. His romance with music dates back to his days as a bandsman with the groups MGKK 4 in Ghana and Van Greene in the United Kingdom. He grew up enjoying the works of Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Michael Jackson, Bruce Hornsby, Richard Marx and Michael Bolton, the sorts responsible for his present day choice of genre.

The album features J Town of Channel O's Emcee Africa 2008. It was produced by talented producer Kaywa of the Groove Zone Studios in Tema, Jay So of 'Skillions' fame. Other tracks on the album include 'In my head', 'Go', 'Can't explain' and 'Quiver'. It is promoted by 1 Contact Records and NKACC Management.

Some years ago, an album like 'This is who I am', which from both the outside and inside, appears to be a well thought out and carefully produced one, wouldn't have been given a dog's chance on radio as a result of the conspiracy musicians were suffering from payola influenced disc Jockeys at the time. But a lot has changed in the past three years as urban radio is fast recognizing talent ahead of monetary considerations. Now, listeners want to be fed with quality, nothing less. 'This is who I am', is quality and quite audacious from someone who perfectly understands the intricacies of music. It may just end up as the box office breaker, of this festive season!
