As a Ph. D. student, I actually had three projects I wanted to work on. Thank goodness my advisor said, "why don't you work on the web for a while." He gave me some seriously good advice because the web was really growing with people and activity, even in 1995! Technology and especially the internet can really help you be lazy. Lazy? What I mean is a group of three people can write software that ten millions can use and enjoy. Can three people answer the phone a million times a day? Find the leverage in the world, so you can be truly lazy!

Overall, I know it seems like the world is crumbling out there, but it is actually a great time in your life to get a little crazy, follow your curiosity, and be ambitious about it. Don't give up on your dreams. The world needs you all!

Google搜索引擎源于拉里·佩奇和谢尔盖·布林在斯坦福大学读书时所做的一个研究项目。更确切地说，他们最开始是在佩奇简陋的宿舍搞研究，没多久搬到车库。跟许多发明家的故事差不多，他们最终在小车库搞出了大工程。佩奇说，那时他们俩到处借钱，教授、亲戚、朋友，只要是想得到的人都去借了，幸好，两人“跌跌撞撞”启动的搜索引擎工程一面世，立即得到迅速发展。
据说两人1995年在斯坦福大学认识时并不“情投意合”。当时两人都是斯坦福大学的硕士，佩奇24岁，布林23岁，两人在一次校友会上结识，他们都有很强的主见，意见分歧时互不相让，不管讨论什么问题几乎都会争吵起来。但最终两人却在解决计算机学最大挑战“搜索引擎”的问题时找到了共同点。

1996年初，佩奇和布林开始合作研究一名为“BackRub”的搜索引擎，到1998年上半年逐步完善这项技术后，两人开始为这项技术寻找合作伙伴。他们找到雅虎的创始人之一戴维·菲洛。菲洛认为他们的技术确实很可靠，但建议他们自己建立一个搜索引擎公司发展业务，发展起来后再考虑合作。
在斯坦福大学中，佩奇遇到了谢尔盖·布林。他们在1998年开始合作运行Google。Google以他的专利PageRank为基础给网页排名。他们还建造了由塑胶拼图板组成的喷墨打印机。
当两位创始人于2001年聘用埃里克·施密特为Google主席、首席执行官后，佩奇辞去了其总裁职务。这三架马车一直推动着Google的发展。
