Several weeks after a young man had been hired, he was called into the personnel director's office.

“What is the meaning of this? “ the director asked, “When you applied for the job, you told us you had five years' experience. Now we discover this is the first job you ever held.”

“Well,” the young man said, “in your advertisement you said you wanted somebody with imagination.”

【词汇讲解】

1.hire雇用。文中hire是及物动词的用法。如果是不及物动词，就是“接受雇用“的意思，常与介词 “out／on”连用：He hired out as a farmhand.他当了农场雇工。

2.personnel主管人事的：sb.’s personnel file某人的人事档案； a personnel man人事部职员

3.director经理，主管。在不同的语境下有不同的职位的意思，如“局长”、“处长”、“校长”、“导演”、“指挥”、“神父”等。

4.apply for a job申请就业。Apply是个很实用的词，作及物动词时，apply⋯to 是致力于⋯ 的意思：He applied himself to learning French.他致力于学习法语。作不及物动词时，apply to有“适用”的意思：This rule applies to freshmen only.此项规定仅适用于大一新生。

5.discover发现，及物或不及物皆可，作及物动词时：She discovered she had lost her purse. 她发现自己丢了钱包。作不及物动词时：The rumour is false, as far as I can discover.就我所知，传闻不确。
