Whenever there is a health crisis, two groups of people can bring help--doctors and nurses.
每当出现健康危机时,有两组人可以提供帮助——医生和护士
A nurse is a person skilled or trained in caring for sick or injured people.
nurse指的是在照顾病人或受伤的人方面受过训练的人
We also use the word "nurse" as a verb.
我们也把“nurse”用作动词
You can nurse a person or animal back to health.
你可以照料人或动物恢复健康
And you can nurse a patient, helping that person heal or get better.
你可以护理病人,帮助病人痊愈或好转
But you can also nurse a symptom, something unhealthy like a headache after a late-night party.
但你也可以调治一种症状,比如深夜聚会后的头痛等不健康的症状
You can nurse other bad things too, like a grudge.
你也可以怀有其他坏情绪,比如怨恨
A grudge is a strong feeling of anger toward someone that lasts for a long time.
grudge指的是对某人怀有的一种强烈的愤怒情绪,这种情绪会持续很长时间
If you nurse a grudge, you keep the anger alive.
如果你怀有怨恨,你会一直让这种愤怒存在
You make sure it doesn't lessen over time.
这种情绪肯定不会随着时间的推移而减少
You can use the verb "nurse" in other ways.
你可以以其他方式使用动词“nurse”
For example, you can "nurse a drink."
例如,你可以“慢饮慢酌”
That doesn't mean you are trying to heal it, but rather you drink it very slowly, to make it last longer.
它的意思不是你在试图治愈它,而是你喝得非常慢,这样可以喝得更久
For example, if I go to a costly restaurant and buy a $15 drink, I might nurse it to make it last the whole meal.
例如,如果我去一家高档的餐馆,买了一杯15美元的饮料,我可能会慢饮慢酌,这样我整顿饭都可以一直喝
The word "doctor" is also used as a verb.
“doctor”也可用作动词
The Merriam-Webster online dictionary says that one meaning of the verb "doctor" is to give medical treatment.
在韦氏在线词典上,动词“doctor”的一个意思是提供医疗服务
For example, she doctored her sick friend.
例如,她治疗她生病的朋友
That makes sense. But personally, I have never heard the term used that way.
那讲得通
In my opinion, it is more common to nurse someone back to health.
在我看来,“nurse someone back to health”更常见
Sometimes people say "doctor" to mean "fix."
有时人们用“doctor”表示“修理”
For example, he has doctored that clock several times.
例如,那个钟已经被他修了好几次了
But again, this usage is rare.
但这种用法也很少见
A more common usage of the verb "to doctor" is to change something in an honest or dishonest way.
动词“to doctor”更常见的用法是以诚实或不诚实的方式改变某事
For example, the school board official was accused of doctoring her study results.
例如,学校董事会的官员被指控篡改她的学习成绩
She was caught changing the results to fit her policy needs.
有人发现她为了满足自己的政策需要而改变了结果
When we change something, either in an honest or dishonest way, we sometimes add the word "up" to "doctor."
当我们改变某事时,不管是以诚实的方式还是不诚实的方式,我们有时会在“doctor”后面加上“up”
For example, the writer doctored up the script to better fit the actor.
例如,作者修改了剧本,使之更适合这位演员
Here is a dishonest example: The legal team was accused of doctoring up photographs of evidence.
这里有一个“不诚实”的例子:法律团队被指控篡改证据照片
Now, let's hear two expressions using the word doctor.
现在,让我们来听两个含有“doctor”的短语
If something is exactly what you want or need, it is "just what the doctor ordered."
如果某样东西正是你需要的,那么它就是“just what the doctor ordered
This expression can be used in many situations.
这个短语可以在很多情况下使用
For example, if I worked all week, a night on the couch with a good movie might be just what the doctor ordered.
例如,如果我整个星期都在工作,那么晚上躺在沙发上看一部好电影可能正合我意
In a recent Words and Their Stories, we talked about another expression that means the same thing.
在最近一期《词汇掌故》节目中,我们谈到了另一个与之意思相同的短语
If something "hits the spot," it is just what you need at that time.
“hit the spot”的意思是正是所需要的
Our last expression is this: Doctors make the worst patients.
我们最后一个短语是:Doctors make the worst patients
This means it is difficult to give people advice about something which they do for a living.
它的意思是很难给人们提供有关他们赖以为生的工作的建议
This is because they might feel they know better than the person giving the advice.
这是因为他们可能觉得自己比给出建议的人更了解情况
For example, Mary tried to persuade her boss at the bank to seek help for his growing debt.
例如,玛丽试图说服她在银行工作的老板为他日益增长的债务寻求帮助
But he got angry. He said he knew best how to deal with his money.
但他很生气
She just shook her head and said to herself, "It's true. Doctors make the worst patients."
她只是摇了摇头,自言自语道:“这是真的
Now, let's hear two neighbors use some of these nurse and doctor expressions.
现在,让我们来听两个邻居是如何使用含有“nurse和doctor”的短语的
Hi there! I see you're cleaning up your garden. It was so beautiful this summer.
嗨!我看到你在清理你的花园
Thanks! I was pretty proud of it. Are you good with plants?
谢谢!我为此感到非常自豪
I'm only good at killing them, unfortunately. Like this one. It's pretty brown.
不幸的是,我只擅长杀死它们
Oh dear.
天哪
Do you think you can nurse it back to health?
你认为你能照料它恢复健康吗?
Um…I'm sorry. But this plant is dead. You need to water your plants.
嗯…对不起
Good advice. You should tell Celia across the street the same thing. She owns a plant store but still the plants at her house look awful!
好建议
I tried to give her some advice once. She did not like that one bit.
我曾经试图给她一些建议
You know how it goes: Doctors make the worst patients.
你知道的:医生往往是最难缠的病人
But as for your plant…it's dead. There's no nursing a plant back from the dead.
但至于你的植物……它死了
That's too bad. I wanted to use it for some photos for my website.
太不幸了
Maybe you could add a plant.
也许你可以加一株植物
What do you mean?
你是什么意思?
You know, doctor the photo on your computer and add a plant.
你知道,在你的电脑上篡改照片,添加一株植物
Isn't that dishonest?
难道这不是不诚实吗?
The photo is just for your website.
这张照片只供你的网站使用
It's not like your doctoring official evidence in a criminal case. Now that would be dishonest.
这又不是让你在刑事案件中篡改官方证据
And that's the end of this Words and Their Stories. Until next time … I'm Anna Matteo.
