Now, Words and Their Stories from VOA Learning English.

7~Yn&_jpWIL

On this program we talk about common expressions in American English.

b56D-5.q|=1b;FO

And on today's show we will talk about a very common household object.

drTj8xH+p~i2o%Iz

People used it thousands of years ago and most likely you used it today.

O+%S_bO*b~%Qut%V34#

I am talking about soap.

LWZr=!PZp6O+,y

History experts say instructions for making soap were reportedly found on a clay Babylonian tablet.

]JhYU;Jrs+c5=f*w

Ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Roman cultures also used some kind of soap.

Jb9E_Yji%(c#nYU&|z

Today there are many different types of soap – from bars to liquid, from scented to plain.

+,)m]2q*hdj,Wv8

There are soaps to clean our bodies, our pets, our cars and our homes.

o&BGQpSzMxaz

Advertising for these products is big business.

J;nI&Jz([n74H

In fact, it is this connection to advertising that has given us the name of a very popular form of entertainment – soap operas.

~+c;h,yXOX

Just as many cultures have their own kinds of soaps, they also have their kinds of soap operas – complicated stories about human relationships.

5q%e~dYXBmK2Wz

Many years ago (in the U.S.), they were the first programs to be paid for by soap-making companies.

1F-HJUBWSSU7wp%@taM

Companies that made soaps, detergents and other cleaning products originally broadcast their commercials during these shows.

]~mOiJfjlOam06#

And who was mainly watching these daytime shows?

~kvz+6Fpup9YAVmsC

Housewives.

|U9c+u!5Q[aAK]V=

So, these commercials were aimed at women who may have been cleaning their homes while watching the television program.

O2^-wb3bMYx-g

So, that is where the "soap" part of the name "soap opera" comes from.

][65#A^(7V.Hm[ihg&j3

But what about "opera"? Why not call them "soap shows"?

Qe#!~HfVYcMOiQySCm

Well, in soap operas, the human stories that play out are extreme.

dlmzcERtr]v9HK_orA

The characters and situations of the shows are over-the-top!

3eQP@(mhHYEm_~I

They probably would not happen in real life.

_4.lv[RDyhwXJ

In fact, that is why many people criticize or make fun of soaps.

hL1*g#WC2jhFG0m6Be9

They are too unrealistic.

AEr9;ZqtD)gUBg

src=http___image.uczzd.cn_15786369943230976484.jpg_id=0&from=export&refer=http___image.uczzd_副本.jpg

R1ka3ErH2B#7_,f

But who cares?! Not the people who love soap operas, that's for sure.

zTUIRz(2+YhNf

People do not watch soap operas to see real life or to learn valuable lessons.

b&yw;A]p,_~@.S

Soap operas are escapist entertainment.

e2h(VZFbNG5rXSGb%t

You get to escape your own life and live dangerously in someone else's ... for about an hour at a time.

gr29Q11x@.7Ke8!3

As you may have noticed during this program, we often call soap operas just "soaps,"

GI-a5,B@R,-BsESUF~

as in, "Don't bother Felicia right now. She is catching up on all her soaps."

G!Yp!%)=_R,Vd

Now, some people may not want to admit that they enjoy watching such a show.

PnLOZtlYnW8@v!o

For this reason, some people call soap operas their "guilty pleasure."

9%_*0US.PKQ

Guilty pleasures appeal to our secret desires, the ones we do not like to publicly share.

l%a]9WF*7!MuETc)

You watch something, enjoy it ... and then feel a little guilty afterward.

A2Kl+yvN7ujR2*_

People who watch soap operas – either daytime or nighttime soaps – are usually very loyal followers.

,%+Vq!!8ubM5oBFZC71

In fact, it is this audience loyalty that appealed to advertisers in the first place.

Ew1K!kh@9aO8-I

Soaps can be very addictive.

lpJsUV-Y1wjZ)q~l%c

Their stories are open-ended.

u+GMVOXqVS(E+

Each episode leads to the next, to the next, to the next.

5m(ZhMZN&FC

And they usually end on some sort of cliffhanger, or an especially exciting ending.

lY|x2rrI-3d

You really want to know what will happen next.

t)qhtjvxGjdX^+rSy

"Tune in next week!"

%UI!9K9z94ClU^a23D

And you do tune in next week.

x]!R6ED,^bxP

You can't wait to find out what happens!

8eXfY^P&(89J_iL-W^sO

That is how a soap opera gets you hooked.

1T8DS+P6ILdWotBa

But that's not all! I have so much more to tell you ...

o.7wJ,Pa+s|m|JmQQ~oJ

... next week on Words and Their Stories. I'm Anna Matteo.
