Barack Obama looks to general election, campaigns in Virginia
The next phase in the race for the White House, with Hillary Clinton set to throw her supporter now behind Barack Obama come to Saturday. The presumptive nominee himself was in Virginia, signaling the beginning of the general election campaign. ABC's David Wright is with the Obama campaign.
We are in Bristol, Virginia, where the stage is just now being set for Barack Obama's second big campaign event of the day here in Virginia, Obama hoping to make Virginia a battle ground in the fight for the general election. It's been a long time since it'd been another Democratic column in 1964 under Lyndon Johnson, but Obama is hoping to change that. He has a good many supporters here ,did very well in Virginia in the primaries. And at this one event alone, more than 20,000 people are expected to attend.
Obama’s showing signs today that the Democratic Party is now his party, saying that like his campaign, the party will no longer accept contributions from packs or lobbiers, and Obama campaign is here in Virginia with two people who may potentially be on the shortlist for the vice presidential slot on the ticket. Among them, former governor Mark Warner and US Senator Jim Webb, but of course, Obama first has to deal with the awkward question of Hillary Clinton, who's also expressed strong interest in that job.
