In 2003, Bethany Hamilton, 13, lost her left arm to a shark attack while surfing off Hawaii. Soul Surfer dramatizes the story of how she overcame that to achieve her dream of becoming a professional athlete. It's a story told in her autobiography, which is the basis for the film that stars AnnaSophia Robb.

Actually there are two heroines in it. Of course, one is AnnaSophia Robb. She actually determined to act at 3. She also dances and wins lots of awards. But the surfing is not that easy for her as well. To play the role, Robb had to learn how to surf well enough to play a champion. The young actress admits she never got to that level, but, tutored by Hamilton, she did pick up the basics.

Then the other heroin is absolutely Bethany Hamilton who says” Most of all if people are going through a hard time, they could be encouraged and find inspiration to push through those hard times and see that, in my family's case, so much good has come out of it."

The filmmakers use special effects to digitally 'remove' Robb's arm. However no tricks were necessary for the surfing scenes because Hamilton herself did the breathtaking wave riding. "Not a lot of people know that much about surfing, so I hope they're educated on it.” Hamilton said so.

电影中运用特技将罗伯的胳膊给“隐身”起来，但是在冲浪场景中，特技就变得多余了。因为这些冲浪的场景都是由汉米尔顿亲自上阵的。“很多人都对冲浪缺乏了解，所以我也希望通过本部影片使人们更多地了解这项运动。”汉米尔顿如此说。

"I knew Bethany's story, of course, but I thought 'what an incredible role', explains Robb. " I was so fascinated by all of the challenges. What would it be like to have your arm taken and what would go through your head and how would your faith be challenged? "

Bethany Hamilton won her first amateur surfing championship just two years after she lost her arm. In 2007 she realized her dream of becoming a professional surfer. She also established the "Friends of Bethany," a non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting shark attack victims and amputees around the world.

汉米尔顿在鲨鱼袭击事件的两年后，获得了业余冲浪的冠军。2007年，她终于成了专业冲浪选手，同时她也设立了一个非营利性的组织来帮助受到鲨鱼袭击的幸存者和截肢者。
