1.“whatever”在本对话中用作代词,表示“不管什么,无论什么”,例如:You must do whatever is best for you.(什么对你有利,你就得做什么。)此外,“whatever”还可以用作形容词,表示“不管什么样的,无论怎样的”,例如:Whatever excuse he makes will not be believed.(不管他找什么借口,都没有人会相信。)

在请别人帮忙时,汉语和英语中都有一些客气话要说,总的来说,这些表达方式都十分相近,不会造成什么大麻烦。但是仍有些差异要注意。
英语里的“Thank you.”和“Please.”比汉语的“谢谢”和“请”
用得更加广泛。如果求人帮点小忙,比如借支铅笔、问个路、传个话、叫人来接电话等,中国人常常不说这些客气话,特别是对亲属和好朋友,更不用这样客气。许多中国人认为,西方人过于喜欢说“Thank you.”和“Please.”不但没有必要,甚至叫人很不耐烦。另一方面,中国人相信对方知道自己的感激之情,因此不必多言;但在西方人看来,不说这些客气话就有些失礼,对别人不够尊重。
当你答应了西方人的请求,他们向你表示感谢时,你该怎么回答呢?有人会说!“这是我应该做的。”如果把这句话直译为“It's my duty.”
就会含有下列意思:你本身并不想做这件事,但这是你的职责,所以不得不做。这与汉语所表达的原意有很大出入。适当的回
答应是“I'm glad to be of help.”或“It's a pleasure.”,表示“我很乐意帮忙(为您效劳)。”
人们往往认为汉语中的“请”相当于英语中的“Please.”。但在某
些场合却不宜用英语“Please.”,比如让别人先进门或先上车时,不说“Please.”,一般都说“After you.”。(初学英语的人常用“You go first.”,这是不对的。)在餐桌上请人吃饭吃菜、喝酒,一般用“Help yourself ( to something ) .” ,也不用 “Please.”。
