上一期节目中，我们了解了表示成功的两个习语。不过，据说按辈分排，成功是晚辈，失败才是长辈。既然人生不可能是一次plain sailing 一帆风顺的旅程，每个人都会碰到各种困难，碰到束手无策，碰到必须低头的时候，那么，在下一次成功之前，我们就勇敢的会会这些挫折和失败吧。

汉语中我们常常用不撞南墙不回头表示不彻底碰壁不知道反省。那么墙也就成了阻碍，失败的代名词。英语中，同样有两个和wall相关的习语表示失败和凶多吉少。

Go to the wall 碰壁，失败

来看一个小对话。

A: John, you have to do something instead of lying here. We need you. John, 你得做点什么，不能光躺在这儿。我们需要你。

B: I will not let my people and businesses go the the wall. Just leave me alone, please. 我不会让我的人和生意陷入绝境的。让我安静一会儿吧。

再比如：

Unless the company gets some more investment soon it will go to the wall. 除非这间公司能得到更多的投资，不然很快就会倒闭了。

另一个表示情况很糟的短语也包含wall。The writing is on the wall. 就在墙上写着呢。谁都看得出来情况很糟糕，即将失败的。

A: We have to close the company and try something else. 我们不得不关闭公司，尝试做点别的了。

B: Why? I know it’s hard. But life is always up and down; there is no real plain sailing. If we keep trying…为什么呢？我知道不容易，但是生活就是起伏不定，没有真正的一切如意。如果我们继续努力……

A: It’s not about keeping trying things. With the current poor economic climate the writing is on the wall for many companies. We need another chance. 不是努不努力的问题。目前经济气候不佳，许多公司都将凶多吉少。我们需要别的机会。
