【语法用法】
at the cost of表示“以……为代价”，后一般接表示损失或花费的东西的词，如life，health，time和money。偶尔，也接表示被遭受的东西的词，如discomfort，misery和sufferin等；
at all cost表示“不惜任何代价，无论如何”，它的用法比at any cost更为普遍；
cost原属于不及物动词，但是为了方便，不出现及物动词加间接宾语再加状语宾语的特殊结构，习惯上将cost作为及物动词。
This cost me much money.
cost的状语宾语（或直接宾语）同at the cost of后接的一样，一般都是表示损失或花费掉的东西的词，偶尔接表示被遭受的东西的词。
The accident cost him his life.
他为这场事故付出的代价是他的生命。
【词义辨析】
charge, price, fee, fare, cost, expense
这些名词均有“价格，费用”之意。
charge指提供服务时索取的费用，也指货物的价格、价钱。
price指商品在市场出售的价格，尤指卖方对商品所提出的单价。比喻意义指付出的代价。
fee指上学、求医以及找律师等付的费用，还可指会费、借书费等。
fare侧重指旅行时所付的车、船费等费用。
cost指生产某东西的成本，也泛指商品的价格，可与price换用。
expense常指实际支付的费用总数额，有时也指钱的花费。
cost, expend, spend, take, pay
这些动词均含“花费”之意。
cost指花费时间、金钱、劳力等。其主语是物，而不能由人充当，也不用被动形式。
expend较正式用词，通常指为某一专门目的而花费大量金钱、时间或精力。
spend普通用词，与cost基本同义，但主语必须是人。
take普通用词，指需要占用空间、时间或精力等，其主语可以是人，也可以是一件事情。
pay“付款、给……报酬”，它可作及物动词也可作不及物动词。pay常用于以下几种句型：①Sb．pay（s）sb．money意为“某人付款给另一个人或某人给另一个人多少报酬”。
He pays me fifty yuan a week．
他每周给我五十元的报酬。
②pay for sth．意为“付……款、给……报酬”。
He has paid for the meal．
他已付了那顿饭的钱。
③pay money for sth．意为“花多少钱买某物”。

【词义辨析】
besides, but, except, except for
这些前置词或短语均含“除……之外”之意。
besides着重于指另外还有。
but侧重指不包括在内。
except侧重于排除在外，从整体里减去。可与but换用，但语气较强。
except for多用于在说明基本情况或对主要部分加以肯定，还引出相反的原因或细节，从而部分地修正前面的主要意思，含惋惜意味。
【例句用法】
They all went to sleep except me.
