The next day. Susan and Michelle are setting the table for dinner.

Michelle：I love my school. I have so many good friends there now. I wouldn't miss a day even if I were really sick.

Susan：Come and sit down for a minute, Michelle. I'd like to talk to you about something. Something important.

Michelle：What's wrong, Susan?

Susan：Oh, there's nothing wrong, Michelle But your daddy and I are talking about something that I'd like your opinion about.

Michelle：I know. I heard you talking about it the other night when I was trying on my new clothes.It's about moving to Los

Angeles.

Susan：You're right How do you feel about it?

Michelle：Well, I really wouldn't want to move, but…

Michelle：But if you and Daddy wanted to, I guess you know what's best for the family and for me.

Susan：Honey, we don't have to move if you're not going to be happy about it.

Susan：think so. He's going to tell us tonight about the job offer.

A little later that evening. Harry arrives. He is ready to eat dinner with the family.

Harry： Well, how was everybody's day today?

Susan：Michelle was chosen to do the school poster for the play this year.

Harry：Congratulations, Michelle! That's something!And how was your day, Susan?

Susan： I see you're in a good mood. Why don't youtell us about your day.

Harry：I met with Bill York.

Susan：It's OK to talk about it, Harry. Michelle knows all about it.

think you should take the job, we're behind you.

Susan：We'll move after the school term.

Susan：OK. Now, tell us about your talk with Mr.York. Did you take the job?

Harry： Nope.

Michelle：What?

Susan：No? You didn't take it?

Harry：No, I did not take the job.

There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife

and son. He was working on his future and nothing could stop him.

　　Over the phone his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday."

　　Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel.

　　"Jack, did you hear me?"

　　"Oh sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him." Jack said.

　　"Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce about the many days you spent with him," Mom told him.

　　"He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important… Mom, I'll be there for the funeral," Jack said.

　　Jack kept his word and attended Mr. Belser's funeral.

　　The night before he returned home Jack and his Mom went to see Mr. Belser's old house one more time.

　 Standing in the doorway Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture...Jack stopped suddenly.

　　"What's wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked.

　　"The box is gone," he said.

　　"What box?" Mom asked.

　　"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was, 'The thing I value most.' Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said.

　　It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died. One day Jack discovered a parcel list in his mailbox.

　　Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught his attention.

　　"Mr. Harold Belser," it read.

　　Jack tore it open. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside.

　　"Upon my death please forward this box to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I value most in my life." His heart raced as tears filled his eyes. Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.

　　He opened the cover. Inside he found these words engraved: "Jack, Thanks for your time! — Harold Belser."

　　"The thing he valued most...was...my time."

　　Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared his appointments for the next two days…he needed some time to spend with his wife and son.
