中国人最怕来生做牛做马，因为很辛苦。牛马辛辛苦苦帮人耕田，帮人背东西。最后还是被人宰马宰牛且为乐，命运对牛未免太残酷了。

上回我们就学到了一个跟牛有关的词语（宰了小牛拿来款待客人）：kill the fatted calf。It means "to to celebrate in order to welcome a friend or relative that you have not seen for a long time". For another example: Annie's coming home, let's kill the fatted calf!

那么，英美人为何用杀一只小牛来表示这个意思呢？这就是我们今天要探寻的问题。

It is said that it comes from a story in the Bible when a father killed a young cow in order to celebrate the return of his son who he thought was dead. 这来源于《圣经》。《圣经. 路加福音》第十五章就记载了耶稣说的一个故事：有一个人要父亲分些财产给他，拿着财产去了远方花天酒地。不久，钱都花光了，他很后悔的回到父亲身边，父亲高兴得不得了，马上叫仆人把养肥的小牛牵来杀了，让大家吃喝取乐，因为我这个儿子是死而复活、失而复得的。现在，人们就用kill the fatted calf（把养肥的小牛杀了）这成语来说设盛宴热情招待回家的游子或来访的宾友。

我们来看一个小对话：

A: What will you do for your son who is gonna release from jail in two days?

A : 你儿子还有2天就要被释放回家了，你准备如何庆祝呢？

B : I would rather kill the fatted calf for him in the restaurant than at home.

B : 我想在餐馆弄一桌为他接风，不想在家弄了。
