不少人掉下了万丈深渊。
Andrian实在看不下去，于是决定向上司请求打开舱门。

bridge：大家都知道是"桥"，
不过，在电影中，bridge是个术语，指"舰桥"，
也就是船上的控制塔，里面就驾驶舱。

chief:形容词，指"首席的"，如CEO的首字母的全拼就是
chief；
另外，chief还可以指"最主要的"，
例如， the chief cause of disease."最主要的病因"；
chief作副词时表"主要地"，
例如，This girl became ill chiefly because she did
not eat enough.
"这个女孩生病的原因主要是因为她没有好好吃饭"。
volume:在电影中是指"音量"，
例如，Please turn the volume down."请将音量调低"；
volume还有一个平时我们不常用的意义，"书"
例如，This library contains over a million volumes.
"这个图书馆藏书超过一百万本"。

decisions to save our human civilization.
我知道，为拯救我们的人类文明，我们都不得不去做出困难
的决定。
But to be human, means to care for each other.
And civilization means to work together to create a
better life.
但是，作为人类，那就意味着要相互照顾，
而文明的含义是大家要同心协力地去创造更美好的生活。

and nothing civilized about what we're doing here.
如果上面的定义是正确的，
那么我们现在所做的一切是毫无人性的,文明也是无从谈起。
Dr. Helmsley's passion is admirable.
Helmsley博士的热情是值得称道的
admirable:是动词admire的形容词形式，指"让人称赞的"，"
让人欣赏的"，
例如，Among her many admirable qualities are
generosity and graciousness".
慷慨大度是她众多让人欣赏的品质中之一；明星们都有自己
的崇拜者，
这个"崇拜者"可以称为admirer，
例如，Ronaldo has many admirers."罗纳尔多有很多崇拜者
"，
当然这个admirers也可以用fans来替代。

But I remind you that we have very limited resources
and extremely limited time.
但我要提醒你们的是，我们资源非常有限，时间更是少之又
少。
Ask yourselves, can we really stand by and watch
these people die?
问问你们自己，我们真的能袖手旁观，眼睁睁地看着别人失
去生命吗？
stand by:在电影中是指"站在一旁（什么也不做）"，
相当于我们汉语常说的"袖手旁观"，
不过事实上，stand by一般用来表达对某人的支持，
如，He stood by her throughout the trial as he
believed her to be innocent.
"在整个审讯过程中，他都站在她的一边，因为他相信她是无
辜的"；
另外，stand by还经常在口语中表示"作好准备"，相当于be
ready，
例如，The emergency services were standing by waiting
for the plane to land.
"急救队已严阵以待，等着飞机的降落"，
想必飞机上是出现了需要紧急救护的乘客了。

I read a quote two days ago.
两天前我读到一句话
The author is probably dead by now.
But he said: "The moment we stop fighting for each
other".
"That's the moment that we lose our humanity".
这个作者现在可能已经死了，
但他在书上说：
在我们停止为别人而战的那一刻，那就是我们失去人性的那
一刻。
humanity：可以指"人性"，这也是2012这部电影的一个重要
元素之一；
humanity也可以指"全人类"，
例如，They face charges of committing crimes against
humanity.
"他们面临反人类罪的指挥"，这种罪通常也是像萨达姆这种
级别的人才能触犯的。

And in order to save the human race,
we have an obligation to stick to this plan
which every nation on this flotilla signed up for.
为了能让人类繁衍下去,我们有责任去严格执行这个计划，
而且对于这一点，所有船上的国家元首都已签名同意。
They're in God's hands now.
他们命运如何，现在只能听从上帝的安排了。
obligation： "责任"，但也有duty，"义务"的意思，
这与responsibility的区别就在于此，
例如，Students usually feel an obligation to attend
lectures.
"学生们经常会觉得听讲座的一种义务"。
在商业上，obligation是指的就是"协议"，
例如，The companies failed to meet their obligation
to plant new trees.
"那些公司没有执行合同条款去栽树"。

We have barely15 minutes left!
我们就剩15分钟多点。
barely：是个既简单但又不简单的词，咱们看几个例子体会
一下。
We could barely see the road in the fog. "在大雾中，
我几乎看不到路"，
在这我要提个问题，到底是"看到路"还是"看不到路"？
继续看例子，They produced barely enough for their
needs every year．
＂他们每年的收成只能勉强糊口＂，
我的问题还是："他们的粮食够吃吗？"；
再看第三个例子，He is barely old enough to drive a
car.
"他也只是勉强达到领驾照的年龄"，现在的问题是"他的年龄
够大吗？"。
很明显，以上三个问题的答案都是肯定的，因为barely的意
义是"几乎不"，
比如说，你跟你的一个十多年没见过的小学一年级的同学遇
上，
你说你几乎认不出他，但事实上你还是认出了这个当年老拽
你辫子的小坏蛋。
Do you want to be responsible for the extinction of
the human race?
你想为人类的灭绝负责吗？
Can you handle that, Adrian?
这么大的责任，你负得起吗,Adrian?
extinction：名词，指"灭绝"，
比如说，the extinction of a species "物种的灭绝"。
数亿年前，发生过the extinction of the dinosaurs　"恐
龙的灭绝"。
extinction的动词形式是extinct，
据说澳洲考拉再过３０年就要从地球上消失了，
英文可以说Koalas may go extinct in 30 years.
