China has called on the international community to cooperate and share technology innovations in combating climate change.

Wan Gang, Chinese Minister of Science and Technology, spoke at the opening ceremony of the Forum on Climate Change and Science and Technology Innovation in Beijing.

"We hope developed countries can provide enough financial support to international cooperation, to further open their technical plans and effectively enhance developing countries' scientific capability in coping with climate change."

He added that the Chinese government has invested a large sum of money in research programs on energy-saving and pollutant reduction. The country has also declared target of reducing energy consumption per unit GDP by 20 percent from 2006 to 2010.

United Nations' Under-Secretary General Sha Zukang said at the opening ceremony that all countries should be responsible for climate change.

"At present, there remain untapped potentials for cooperation between developed and developing countries, as well as for south-south cooperation. Now, we need to accelerate transition to sustainable low-carbon energy economy. Scientist and entrepreneurs need to again rise to the occasion and to play their part in this transition process."

The two-day forum has attracted more than 600 delegates from all parts of the world. Participants will discuss such issues as the establishment of international regime and cooperation mechanisms to protect the global climate system.
