A new visitor information centre at the Peak piazza made from an antique tram cabin has opened.

Officiating at its launch, Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said "Despite Hong Kong's latest attractions the Peak remains the city's top tourist draw."

The information centre, developed under the Peak Improvement Scheme spearheaded by the Tourism Commission, reuses a decommissioned Peak Tram cabin.

The tramcar was in service from 1959 to 1989 and is an artefact of historical value.

Tsang noted "The Government with the District Council and local community has strived to improve the environment and support facilities on the Peak in recent years."

The 140-million-HK-dollar Peak Improvement Scheme started in 2005 featuring themed Victorian-style architecture.

Most works were completed last year and the remainder will finish in phases this year.
