Athletes from the United States who are visiting Beijing have taken a particular interest in the National Stadium, known as the "Bird's Nest." The venue will host both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Summer Olympics as well as track and field events.
Standing on the Nationall Stadium's track, Sandra Snow, the leader of the American track and field team, says the venue is probably one of the best Olympic stadiums that she has seen.
''The track is hard, so it's going to be very very fast. It's a wonderful stadium. It will serve our athletes very well. It's very efficient for athletes. Everything they need is right there and close at hand.''
Snow says the U.S. athletes are planning to train in hot and humid environments, comparable to Beijing in August.
But a bigger challenge for the American track and field athletes is the Olympic selections next month. James Li, head manager of the U.S. men's team, gives more details.
''The preparation for selection is relatively an individual issue. Athletes and their coaches go across the country to practice. But so far no one can be guaranteed an Olympic ticket unless he or she is among the top three in selection.''
With less than three months before the Olympics begin, the U.S. track and field athletes are facing a tough national competition and thus training extra hard.
Snow says all these efforts are for one goal.
''We are still the number one track and field in the world. We will do very well here, and we look forward to competing against all of our friends around the world.''
Snow has been to Beijing six times in the past two years. She says the city is like her second home now, and she has confidence in it to hold a successful Olympics.
''We hope this is a wonderful Olympics for Beijing. We are expecting this to be one of the most beautiful opening ceremonies and for everything to run so efficiently. You have already told us all the things you are doing for the air quality. We believe your air will be in pretty good shape. ''
The U.S. track and field team will start its Olympic journey in Dalian in northeat China to adjust to the country's weather and environment. The members anticipate that careful preparations and good service at the Bird's Nest will lead them to the best performance in their Olympic history.
