During the visit, President Hu Jintao and Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda issued a six-point statement on all-round promotion of strategic and mutually beneficial relations between the two countries.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Tokyo, Chinese President Hu Jintao said China and Japan should make contributions to Asia's revival, and work together to cope with global challenges.

"China and Japan are two important countries in Asia, and we share great responsibility for Asia's peace and development. The two countries could and should further cooperation in all areas. We should give our support and understanding to each other in international and regional affairs.''

The two sides also issued a joint press communiqué on boosting bilateral exchanges and cooperation, covering 70 projects. Both countries pledged joint efforts to maintain peace and stability in Northeast Asia and facilitate the process of six-party talks.

Yang Jiechi says Presdient Hu Jintao's visit has helped deepen economic and trade cooperation between China and Japan.

The two countries agreed to push forward full cooperation in the fields of finance, information, trade and intellectual property rights protection.

Meanwhile, the Chinese foreign minister said President Hu Jintao has pointed out that broadening personnel and cultural exchanges is the most effective and reliable way of deepening mutual understanding.

Delivering a speech at Waseda University, Hu Jintao highlighted the friendly ties between the two neighbors, but also stressed the importance of remembering history.

"History is the most philosophical textbook. To remember history is to make sure that instead of extending hatred, the two nations use the past as a mirror to look forward to the future. This way, Chinese and Japanese people can maintain warm ties generation after generation, and everyone all over the world can enjoy peace and stability forever."

During the visit, President Hu met with Japan's Emperor Akihito, leaders of both houses of parliament and political parties of Japan. He also had extensive contacts with leaders of economic circles and people from all walks of life.

Foreign minister Yang Jiechi says the visit was greeted with great enthusiasm by the Japanese public. People there have expressed the best wishes for the Beijing Olympics, and their full support to the Games.
