Incorporate the Sichuan Earthquake into Textbooks

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has proposed a museum for recording the 8.0-magitude earthquake.

A commentary carried by the Beijing News suggests that the stories that have emerged from the tragedy should be incorporated into textbooks.

It says the earthquake has brought about great loss and pain to the local people and to the entire nation, and we can all draw lessons from this experience.

There have been many moving stories about great sacrifice, determination and commitment by those who have just lost family members.

As the newspaper suggests, the editors of textbooks could choose specific stories to help teach students a sense of responsibility as well as how to react during a disaster.

An article from the the China Youth Daily suggests that students spend time learning the true stories of how people from across the country came together to battle against the catastrophe and care for one another.

The article says if the earthquake is merely remembered as a test question for examinations, it will not only cultivate apathy among the young people, but will also be disrespectful to those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
