Russian President Addresses Peking University

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has stressed that the strategic partnership between Russia and China serves their fundamental interests and both sides will continue to strengthen it.

The new Russian President made the remarks while addressing some 600 students and teachers at China's prestigious Peking University on Saturday. He first extended his sincere condolences to the earthquake victims in Sichuan and said his country will do its best to provide necessary assistance.

Turing to the topic of Russia-China strategic partnership, Medvedev said it serves both countries' fundamental interests.

"Some people do not like such strategic cooperation between our countries, but we understand that this cooperation serves the interests of our people, and we will continue to strengthen it, regardless of whether others like it or not."

He added that as two permanent members of the UN Security Council, Russia and China shoulder a common responsibility for the world's future.

"What we are doing is not directed against any other nation. It is aimed at maintaining a global balance so that all the nations can enjoy stability. In the meantime, Russia, China and their peoples can enter a new phase of sustainable development."

In his speech, the Russian president also made positive assessment on the two countries' comprehensive exchanges in the field of education. He said Russia and China should actively promote exchanges between the youths and create new opportunities for their young people to embark upon more joint projects in such areas as scientific research, technology and culture.

Medvedev wrapped up his China visit and left Beijing on Saturday evening.
