the past continuous describes an action that was going on

and had not yet finished in the past

for example, the past continuous action

Anna was reading

which was already going on before Sarah arrived

Anna was reading when Sarah arrived

We use the past forms of "be"
我们在过去进行时中使用be的过去式
"was", "wasn't", and "were", "weren't" with the past continuous
即"was", "wasn't", and "were", "weren't"

Sarah wasn't eating an apple

They were running through the park

When we asked questions

we put "was" or"were" before the subject
