In 1997--1998, almost three million people were granted visas to visit Australia. The main reasons for these visits were for tourism, for visiting relatives and for obtaining medical treatment. This figure does not include visitors from New Zealand or people on business visas. The most popular state or territory visited by overseas travelers was New South Wales: more than 1.1 million people were attracted to the state. The second most popular state or territory was Queensland: it attracted 909,000 visitors because of Golden Coast. Victoria (337,000 visitors to the nice harbors) and Western Australia (293,000 visitors to fantastic grassland) were next, and the Australian Capital Territory was the least popular. Visitors came from all over the world. The largest group from any one country was Japanese. Second was from the United Kingdon, followed by the United States. In general, the number of visitors from Asian countries fell during the period.
