We have come across the word "experience" used as a noun before, but here as you see it is used as a verb. If you "experience" a particular situation, you are in that situation or it happens to you. If you "experience" a feeling, you feel it or are affected by it.
Some of the students had experienced what hard times meant before they entered the university.

Our country has experienced great changes in the last thirty years.
