Hi! Welcome to Xiaoming Yingyu. Let’s start with our slang for today.
欢迎来到小明英语,让我们开始今天的俚语吧
Ok. So we have three for you today, they are very closely related.
我们今天有三个俚语,它们关联很紧密
Do you know what hit means? Well, it has another meaning as well. When you hit a place, then you are arriving.
你知道hit是什么意思吗?它还有另外一个意思。如果你hit a place,意思就是你在到达一个地方
You can kind of think of it as your feet hitting the ground in a certain place.
你可以想作是你的脚拍打地面
The most common expression that uses “hit” this way is “hit the road”.
最常用的是hit the road
When you say “hit the road”, it means your feet are hitting the road and you are going somewhere.
当你说hit the road的时候,意思是你的脚在拍打路面,你在去一个地方
So if you are trying to leave for school, and maybe your little brother or sister is being slow, you can say,
如果你在准备去学校,你的弟弟或者妹妹很磨蹭,你可以说
“Come on, let’s hit the road, we should start going now.”
让我们hit the road吧,我们应该出发了
Another way to use “hit” is for special places that you are going to. Two of the most common ones are to “hit the slopes”, or “hit the beach”.
Hit也可以用在所去的特殊地点。两个最常用的是hit the slopes和hit the beach
If you are hitting the slopes, you are going to the mountains for skiing or snowboarding.
如果你hit the slopes,意思就是你去山里滑雪或者滑板
If you say “hit the beach”, you are just going to the beach to surf, or just to enjoy the atmosphere.
如果你说hit the beach,意思就是你去海边冲浪,或者享受海边的风光
That’s our slang for today. See? Three different ones, all very closely related.
这就是我们今天的俚语。看到了吧?三个不同的,但是很有关联
Just remember, if you hear “hit”, it means you are going to a certain place, your feet are hitting the ground there.
记住,如果你听到了hit,意思是去一个地方,你的脚在拍打地面
Moving on to sentence structure. Here’s our first example.
现在来讲句型,这是我们第一个例句
“Between Fred and George, George is the better choice for the job.”
在弗莱德和乔治之间,乔治是这个工作更好的人选
So the structure is “Between A and B, A is the better choice for C.”
句型是 在A与B之间,A是针对C更好的选择
Another example is “Between red and blue, blue is the better choice for the color of a car.”
另外一个例子是 在红色和蓝色之间,蓝色是一辆车更好的选择
“Between beef and lamb, beef is the better choice for a roast.” That is another example.
在牛肉和羊肉之间,牛肉是烤肉的更好选择。这是另外一个例子
You are choosing between two things and you are deciding which one is better suited for the position
that is open.
你在两个事物中选择并决定哪个是更好的
It can be a job, it can be a dish, it can be a room in a house, or a class, anything you like.
可以是一个工作,一道菜,一个房间,一门课,或者是任何事物
So it’s a useful sentence structure I think. Alright, moving on, here is our etymology section.
我觉得这是一个很有用的句型。好了,现在我们来讲词源吧
Our root is “mani”. Have you heard of it before? I’m looking at you girls, have you ever gotten a manicure?
我们的词根是mani。你听过吗?女生们,你们做过美甲吗?
A manicure is when someone does your nails for you, and makes sure your hands are really soft afterwards.
美甲就是一个人给你做指甲,在做完之后你的手也非常的柔软
So a manicure is a treatment for your hands. So yup, “mani” means hands. And it actually shows up in a lot of different words.
美甲是一个对你的手的料理。Mani就是手的意思。它出现在很多不同的单词中
“Command” or “commander”, those are words meaning someone who’s in charge or being in charge of somebody.
Command或者commander,这两个词的意思是一个管制别人的人
A commander is a leader, someone who has an official position of direction others.
一个指挥官是一个领导者,有一个统治别人的地位
A long time ago, that meant mostly pointing at things, like during war, a commander would say, go there, go there, do this, all using their hands.
很久以前,很多时候是和用手去指物体相关的。比如打仗的时候,一个指挥官会用手去统治部队的方向
And then being a commander, you command. That is the verb form. You can also make something mandatory.
一个统治者会统治,这是动词。你也可以通过统治把一件事变成法定的。
You have no choice, because you have been commanded to do it. And there is another word that uses the root “mani”, manipulate.
你没有选择,因为你被命令了去做这件事。另外一个用mani这个词根的是manipulate(操纵)
It is when someone skillfully influences or manages a person or a situation.
意思是当某人影响或者管理一个人或者一个状况
They don't always use their hands, but it’s sort of the same effect as molding clay, you are changing something to be what you want it to be. Manipulate.
他们不是总用手,但是效果和塑造泥土差不多,你在把某物按照自己的意愿来改变。
And, one that you’ve probably heard is “demand”. When you demand something, you are asking for it.
你可能听到过demand。当你demand某物的时候,你在要求。
You can say “Hey, can you give me that please?” Oh look, I’m using my hands again.
你可以说,“你好,可以给我那个东西吗?” 看,我又在用我的手了
I guess it’s not a huge surprise that so many words have the root “hand” in them. So that is our root for today.
我觉得很多单词里都有这个词根不是一件让人惊讶的事吧。这就是我们今天的词根
“mani”, meaning hands. Why don’t you try listening for this root in your daily life? You might be surprised how often it comes up.
Mani就是手的意思。你也试着在每天的生活里听听有没有这个词根的词吧。它出现的频率可能会让你惊讶
I hope you learned something today, and that you enjoyed the class.
我希望你今天学到了一些知识,并且喜欢这节课
