fISC+t+C4wvgf#^,;T&

Here’s a question: If you could extend your life 3 years, just by running 7 minutes a day - would you do it?

#0N8WxHp^qC

Hey guys, Tara here for Dnews - and I’ll admit it: I’m not a runner. I tried to run a half-marathon back in 2008, but then I injured my knee and it all went to hell. So imagine my surprise, when a new study pops up this week in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology - that says you don’t have to go the distance, to reap the benefits of running. Turns out, all it takes - is 7 minutes a day!

The article shares the results of a 15-year-long cohort study of over 55,000 adults, to see whether running could reduce someone’s risk of death from anything - not just heart disease.

Hte_Awb[]16I

Now because it is a cohort study, it can’t technically conclude that running is what causes the reduced risk of death - but the correlation is there, and it paints a pretty clear picture. People who run, even in modest amounts, of 51 minutes a week - were found to have a 45% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular-related death, and a 30% overall reduction in any type of death, compared to non-runners. This means that, on average, running can increase someone’s life expectancy by about three years.

CBhG7&jtGO@

Now 51 minutes a week, or about 7 minutes a day - isn’t exactly a tall order. But the study also took other factors into account - like distance, and speed - and found that even they don’t make much of a difference at all. Even a light jog can significantly reduce one’s mortality risk. Although they did find that persistent runners - people who do it regularly - had the best outcomes, with an average 50% reduction in cardiovascular-related deaths, and 29% reduction in overall mortality.

lfHo~lZW2QgS9ifQ

Pretty impressive. Although it is worth noting that while certain things were adjusted for - like age, smoking, alcohol consumption, and family history of heart disease - diet was not adjusted for, which can have a pretty big influence on someone’s health status.

GhZ6zQ04QWD8qJ3S

Researchers also note that while it is a big study, most of the people who participated were white, middle-to-upper class adults. So it’s not totally clear how their results apply to other populations.

In any case, it’s still promising to know that even the most minimal amount of exercise can have positive effects on your health. And hopefully, that’ll encourage some of us - myself included - to not be so intimidated by the thought of working out. I’m sure all of us out there would agree that 7 minutes a day - is something we can all make time for.

Winds finally blow away thick smog

Residents in many parts of Northern and eastern China finally caught a breath of fresh air on Wednesday, after almost a week of heavy smog in these pollution-prone parts of the country. And the air quality here in the Chinese capital got so bad, that authorities issued an orange alert, putting in place emergency measures to cope with the smog. Now to give you a better picture of just how severe the air pollution was. These are satellite images snapped by US space agency NASA on November the 30th. You can see a "smog belt" extending from the Chinese capital all the way to the province of Shaanxi. This round of smog began late last week and was at its worst at the beginning of this week.

A celebratory mood on Weibo on Wednesday after overnight winds blew back fresh air for many millions of residents in Northern China.

The Chinese capital looked a far cry from just the day before when you couldn't separate day from night, and the city's many landmarks were barely visible.

"This smog makes it hard to see, it's really easy for accidents to happen. Today I didn't drive but as soon as I came out my throat felt uncomfortable, so I'm wearing a mask."

lrgPUFIc0y@WTHBPwE%]

"In the past the air was so clear, you could see the clouds, so clear, but nowadays when can you see a clear sky or white clouds? Never. The air is truly horrible."

J*-HKnaU1X7qU

Residents coped however they could. Many wore masks, a few avoided the outdoors completely while some vented on the internet.

This set of pictures, or rather doodles have gone viral since. Beijing's landmark architecture fading beneath the shroud, brought back with artistic license.

XtIe&p%e;&8LR

And one netizen even took the time and effort to document how the Chinese capital went from filthy to clean in less than 5 hours.

#1W,tiIZv2hP-g*

But jokes aside, the public is also demanding answers.

Awn9Etk+9~b

"It's the result of a combination of local pollution, transferred pollution and unfavourable weather conditions. The pollution was caused by coal burning and industrial emissions while the atmospheric condition made it impossible for the pollution to dissipate," Professor Wang Zifa with Chinese Academy of Sciences said.

Q1T^70wDXgvR7Hdt-

Many are also pointing the finger at the city's response measures, or, the lack of. An orange alert was issued by the Beijing government. Some factories were shut down, construction halted and schools paused outdoor activities.

9-Brp1uWs-(7@[vP*z

"We believe that the orange alert is in line with the Heavy Air Pollution Contingency Plan . But the problem is that we saw heavy pollution for more than three consecutive days, without a red alert issued in advance accordingly. So we believe this contingency plan is in fact inadequate," Dong Liansai, climate & energy campaigner of Greenpeace, said.

=d(_r855=i

For now, residents in the pollution prone regions of China are enjoying a reprieve. But there is one question hanging on the minds of the public, when will fresh air again be the norm and not a luxury.

China witnesses rapid development of electric cars

As part of the effort to reduce carbon emissions, the Chinese government is now encouraging the appearance of more new energy vehicles on the roads. Our reporter Meng Qingsheng visited a major electric cars manufacturer in Beijing, and talked with one of their top engineers on the outlook for the industry.

@FA(=.EZ7s(UI2*.

Driving the low-carbon way. China has decided to put five million new energy vehicles on the roads by 2020. That will take up nearly one-third of the country’s total amount of cars.

^,VqufnJ-+h

Established in 2009, Beijing Electric Vehicle Company is taking the lead to fulfil this mission. It has brought to the market five pure electric car models.

R,YN2]&5HCW&rE

This model of new energy cars has seen rising demand since it entered the market last year. It features hi-tech interior design, smog filtering system, and of course, a long-enduring battery that can go the distance.

5;ii9@H2FzulsWJexr

The battery that EV200 employs can sustain a distance of 260 kilometers, equivalent to a round trip from the capital to neighboring Tianjin city.

y[],Y(GAHzN(.

The manufacturer aims to achieve an annual production of 200-thousand cars by 2020, ten times higher than the current capacity.

-ZDR^j&mu+byKc#]uE

This requires more charging facilities to be built nationwide.

Qtm91l#qZ%g,nn

"We did go through hardships in the beginning. The lack of charging facilities affected our businesses. Our company set up a special team to expand the facility services. We provide free charging facilities for individual customers, while cooperating with other companies to build more public services," Hu Wei, chief engineer with Beijing Electric Vehicle Company, said.

H!nj|F(3K9#1ud1)

The company is now going further by introducing a self-developed alternating- and direct-current converter.

@+F1K^KkI]]#Sd

This technology allows the car’s battery to support other vehicles, as well as home appliances.

er^(WAvJiO.OZ|n

It’s part of the V-to-G system that returns electricity to the grid.

qbtK2.5zFD0F2sD.j

"The electric cars are connected with the grid. Therefore, it's important to have electric load management. A vehicle uses its excess battery capacity to provide power to the electric grid in response to peak load demands. These vehicles can then be recharged during off-peak hours," Hu said.

uI|~f3^64Mn

The fleet of new energy vehicles in China is the second largest in the world after the United States.

2P-z~DndOYqc;Y

China has rolled out a set of measures to further promote the industry’s development.

f;iL~b-8InN9G8X]a%

This move not only contributes to global efforts to fight climate change, but also helps spreads a low-carbon lifestyle in the world's most populated country.
