TEXT:The world's most decorated Olympian Michael Phelps tells Reuters he could not asked for a better way to end his swimming career than with victory at the London Games. MICHAEL PHELPS, AMERICAN SWIMMER, SAYING: "I couldn't have asked for anything else. This is exactly how I wanted to do everything. I prepared myself how I wanted to and I got the results I deserve. It was definitely cool last night to end with a gold medal, a part of the 400 medley relay that we have never lost in Olympic history. That was a title that we wanted to keep and I was lucky to share the pool with the competitors that I did last night." Phelps has won twice as many Olympic titles as any other athlete in the modern Games. MICHAEL PHELPS, AMERICAN SWIMMER, SAYING: "I think the best thing was being able to show the world that whatever you want to do you can. You know I put my mind and I put a lot of hard work into trying to become the first Michael Phelps and try to something that no one else had ever done. And I wasn't letting anything stand in my way to achieve that. And through a 20-year career I can look back and say I did everything I ever wanted." Phelps collected 22 medals after starting Olympic life as a 15-year-old at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters

3【Controversial aircraft tops US-Japan defence talks agenda】
TEXT:Japan's defence minister and officials get an up close look at an Osprey - a controversial half plane, half helicopter. The U.S. military wants to station several of the aircraft at a base on the Japanese island of Okinawa. But the Osprey has been plagued by crashes and safety concerns have sparked a public uproar in Japan. On Friday, Defence Minister Satoshi Morimoto met with his U.S. counterpart Leon Panetta in Washington to discuss the aircraft - which Panetta called perfectly safe. U.S. DEFENSE SECRETARY LEON PANETTA SAYING: "We have tremendous confidence in this plane. We fly it in combat operations, we fly it around the world, we fly it here in this country." Morimoto said a committee would take an independent look into the Osprey's safety record before making any decision. The Osprey plan is part of a larger U.S. effort to rebalance its forces in the Pacific. Andrew Raven, Reuters.

4【Under fire in Aleppo】
TEXT:Rebels on the frontlines in Aleppo. Amateur video out of Syria which could not be independently verified by Reuters appears to show rebels holding positions in the Salaheddine district of Aleppo. Both the Syrian government and rebels have claimed to have control of Salaheddine, a gateway into the city of 2.5 million people and the main focus of fighting in the past week. Reuters journalists have witnessed fierce street fighting in the district, with Syrian government tanks pounding alleyways where rebels took shelter. Syrian army tanks shelled Aleppo Sunday and a helicopter gunship hit rebel positions with heavy machinegun fire. With a U.N. backed ceasefire a distant memory, rebels have been battered by the government onslaught in Aleppo and the capital Damascus. On Sunday State television aired footage of men they say are captured rebels. Activists say some 18,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began last March. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters

【Nature, Nurture Required for Elite Athletes】
TEXT:Swimmer Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time during the London Olympics. Queen Elizabeth II's granddaughter, Zara Philllips, helped her equestrian team win a silver medal. The American women's gymnastics team won gold. All of them are very different athletes. All were elite. Do they have a genetic edge over the rest of us?
Doctors Michael Joyner and Michael Bostwick at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota studied this and also looked at other research.
“Most high-level athletes have something that distinguishes them from regular people and thus makes them able to compete at a very high level,” noted Bostwick.
Joyner added that certain body types can provide advantages in certain sports.
"What is interesting about swimming is there’s a very, very narrow range of elite male swimmer body size," Joyner explained.
Swimmers are tall, typically between 1.9 and 2 meters, and they weigh around 90 kilograms. Height is an advantage. In other sports, the opposite is true.
"In sports like gymnastics, there are complex physiological and physical relationships between how much you weigh and how strong you are," Joyner added. "And the strength to body weight ratio, which is critical to be able to do these tricks in gymnastics, is probably higher in people who are smaller.”
The doctors say runners also have an advantage if they are short.
"We looked a couple of years ago at the 50 men who had broken 27 minutes for 10,000 meters," recalled Joyner. "Forty-nine were East Africans and on average they were between 5’6” and 5’7” (about 1.6 meters) and weighed between 120 or 130 pounds (between 54 and 58 kg)."
Additionally, many East Africans live at high altitudes and so they develop greater lung capacity, but Doctor Joyner says there's more to it. "It’s the way the blood from your heart moves through the lungs and how the blood interacts with the surface area of the capillaries where the oxygen is actually transported," Joyner explained.
Of course there is also the mental part of being able to concentrate under pressure.
Joyner and Bostwick conclude that when it comes to athletic excellence, physical endowment accounts for only about 20 percent of an athlete's abilities. Psychological stamina is also important. But most of the difference between champions and the rest of us comes from the excellent training they receive.

【Report Calls Attention to Millions of Preterm Births】
TEXT:This is the VOA Special English Development Report.
Each year millions of babies are born too soon and too small. Premature or preterm births are defined as births at less than 37 weeks.
Prematurity is the leading cause of death in newborn babies. More than one-fourth of the four million newborns who die each year around the world were born too early.
Preterm babies that survive can suffer a lifetime of serious health conditions. The examples include cerebral palsy, blindness, hearing problems and learning disabilities. Families and communities face emotional, physical and financial costs.
Christopher Howson is the vice president for global programs at the March of Dimes, a nonprofit group. His group and the World Health Organization recently published a report called "The Global and Regional Toll of Preterm Birth."
CHRISTOPHER HOWSON: "Frankly the crisis of preterm birth is under-recognized, undercounted, undervalued and underfunded. I mean, this reports shows that 13 million babies are born every year preterm, and that over a million of those babies die as a result of being born too early."
And these are just estimates; the true numbers could be even higher. More than 85 percent of preterm births happen in Africa and Asia. Africa has the highest rate, with about four million cases each year.
Chris Howson says many of the causes of preterm births are related to poverty and weak health-care systems.
Chris Howson
CHRISTOPHER HOWSON: "For example, the poor overall health and nutritional status of women. A high burden of infectious diseases. Lack of provision of family planning -- allowing a woman to decide when to start and end having children and how to space her children. And also the lack of good prenatal care programs that might identify problems early on in pregnancy."
Preterm births are a problem not just in the developing world. The combined rate in the United States and Canada is the second highest in the world. Preterm birth rates in the United States have increased 36 percent in the last 25 years.
This has been largely the result of two reasons. One is an increase in pregnancies among women over age 35. The other is an increase in the use of reproductive therapies. Fertility treatments can produce multiple births, which increases the risk that the babies will arrive early.
One of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals for 2015 is to reduce death rates in young children by two-thirds. Chris Howson says premature births must be reduced if that goal is to be met. What is being done about this issue? That will be our subject next week.
