为何日本人以自杀为荣

hd^(x0K)l1eLSZAjI8a0

Japan’s attitude toward suicide is more complex than most. Like other nations, suicide rates are affected by mental health issues, economic decline and of course, cultural influences. But what is different about Japan is the persistent notion that suicide is a way to preserve a family’s honor.

Dying with honor is a concept from 12th Century Japan. The military class known as the Samurai, would perform the act of seppuku or "stomach-cutting".Seppuku was a ritual suicide that was considered a last resort in battle to avoid falling into the hands of enemies. By and large the act of ritual suicide faded with Samurai culture and the practice was even outlawed in the late 19th century.

That was until World War Two, when Japan’s Imperial government resurrected many ideas from the Samurai’s ethos known as Bushido, putting particular emphasis on the virtues of militarized suicide attack. Perhaps the most famous of these attacks were orchestrated by Kamikaze pilots who flew their planes into Allied ships.

Seppuku also reemerged in modern times. In 1970, a world renowned Japanese writer named Yukio Mishima, protested the westernization of Japan by committing seppuku. He delivered a speech on top of a military building in Tokyo and then plunged a sword into his own stomach.

So, how much of this history affects modern day Japan? Well, "The most common factor behind suicide in Japan is depression caused by a failure to cope with [social pressure], either because of poverty or the demands of work".Though it is still accepted that Japan’s romanticized view of suicide plays a significant role.

While Seppuku isn’t practiced any more, the idea of dying honorably has evolved in parallel to the stresses of modern-day Japan. A large percentage of suicides are inseki-jisatsu or "responsibility-driven" suicides, whereby those who end their lives hope to clear their debts through a life insurance payout, alleviating any burden on family left behind. And in Japan, looking after your family as your final act,is likely to be perceived as dying with honor.

In the United States, the annual Thanksgiving holiday is an opportunity for family and friends to get together. But as millions of Americans board planes and hit the road, there are renewed concerns of terror threats.

"Right now, we know of no specific and credible intelligence indicating a plot on the homeland," Obama said.

This latest assurance from the U.S. president comes as Americans prepare to celebrate the annual Thanksgiving holiday, in the wake of the Paris attacks and fresh ISIL threats.

"In the event of a specific, credible threat, the public will be informed. We do think it is useful for people as they are going about their business to be vigilant," Obama said.

In Manhattan, more than three million people are expected to attend the massive Macy's Thanksgiving parade, and security forces here are not taking any chances.
Police, firefighters and other first responders have been conducting drills to prepare for different scenarios.

"How do you get in and assess, are you dealing with an active shooter, multiple shooters Is there the potential threat, as we saw in Paris, of a suicide bomber. Is there also the threat, not certainly of the suicide bomber but devices that may be planted by the terrorists. We are constantly trying to learn the creativity," New York City Police chief William Bratton said.

And in a city where uniformed policemen are already very visible, another 1,300 officers from counter-terrorism-related units will be deployed. Police visibility is in itself a deterrent against attacks, says security expert Robert McCrie, because they make soft or easy targets harder to reach.

irp[.UrrY,qi[;I|6SGt

"We have plenty of iconic buildings and places of public assembly that could conceivably interest terrorists and when the security is there, they no longer represent a soft target, they are too tough for the terrorists," Robert McCrie with John Jay College of Criminal Justice said.

Across the nation, security will also be heightened at airports, railroads and bus stations, as some 50 million Americans are expected to travel over the long holiday weekend.
