Honey Therapy
After getting a massive infection, it looked like that Franklin Lloyd would lose his right leg. Aggressive antibiotic treatments just weren’t working and the infection kept spreading wider and deeper. The 67-year-old kidney transplant recipient has a weakened immune system. It’s most likely the reason why he got the infection in the first place and why standard treatments failed.
The fear was that I have to trade my leg for the kidney and that was a very, erm a big concern.
Determined to save his leg, doctors and nurses at North Shore LIJ(1) in Manhasset began looking for alternative treatments and decided to address Lloyd’s infection with honey. Lo and behold(2), the healing powers of honey first used 4,000 years ago by Egyptians to treat wounds began to work, allowing the infection to gently be removed without aggressive and potentially dangerous surgery given Lloyd’s fragile state.
It helped to soften the nonviable tissue so we didn’t have to invasively cut into his leg to remove and it worked beautifully on him. This isn’t the same honey you put in your tea. It’s derived from beehives in New Zealand and then treated with gamma radiation. It was approved by the FDA in 2007 and a godsend for Sally Lloyd who is just so glad her husband was able to avoid surgery.
They don’t know whether he would have survived that so it was a life saver and thank God for us. The wound is still healing but it’s tiny now and Lloyd can’t wait to go back to do with the things he loves like spending time with his grandchildren and going on vacation.

The Italian coastguard says it has rescued 2,000 migrants from the sea since Wednesday.
Eight rescue operations were carried out in the past 24 hours by the Italian coastguard and naval vessels, as well as ships from the German navy, Maltese and Swedish coastguard.
Earlier in the week, Italian ships rescued more than 400 migrants from four boats in the Mediterranean sea, among them four newborns and one young child.
According to the International Organisation for Migration, about 150,000 migrants, many fleeing poverty and war in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, came to Europe by sea this year.

The emblems for the 2020 Summer Games and Paralympic Games being hosted by Tokyo were unveiled on Friday. The ceremony held in Japan's capital city comes exactly five years before the Olympics will actually begin.
Hundreds gathered in a downtown Tokyo to wave flags as the curtain fell to release the official logos. The emblem for the Olympics is based on the letter "T," standing for Tokyo, Tomorrow and Team and was designed by award-winning Japanese artist, Kenjiro Sano.
The black colour of the central column is designed to represent diversity in the combination of all colours, the shape of the circle represents an inclusive and accepting world, and the red of the circle is symbolic of a beating heart. The Paralympic emblem is inspired by the universal sign of equality.
"It will be a symbol of unity, expressing the joy that we will experience when the world gathers in this great city to celebrate the games. A brand that the Japanese people can unite behind as Team Japan, and tirelessly work to deliver great games," said John Coates, IOC vice president.
