Turkey's Interior Minister Muammer Guler, here third from the left, and the Economic Minister Zafer Caglayan, quit on Christmas eve. Each has a son among the 24 people arrested in a corruption inquiry involving the chief of state-run lender Halkbank. Neither minister's been implicated in the scandal and both say their children are innocent. Turkey's prime minister has responded to the investigation by purging police officers involved including the head of the force in Istanbul where Halkbank is based. Tayyip Erdogan's portraying the scandal as a foreign-orchestrated effort to sow seeds of discord in Turkey. The country's flourished economically during his three terms although the Islamist-rooted premier's been accused of authoritarianism. The affair has reignited anti-Erdogan sentiment among many Turks which had been simmering since a wave of mass protests against his rule earlier in the year.

Christmas day dawns on the tents many of the Philippines typhoon survivors still call home. Despite the rain and grey skies many are far from gloomy. Eleven-year-old Joan Odon's among those scouring through discarded shop goods for thing to recycle or give as presents.

At the Church of Santo Nino in Tacloban, Philippines papal representative Archbishop Giuseppe Pinto was among those handing out gifts to the congregation. Assistant parish priest Madeo Alvero says the storm didn't break the spirit of those who survived.

The United Nations is appealing for $800 million to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. The cash would provide food, shelter,water, health and sanitation for a year for 14 million people affected by the storm.

About 30,000 who've taken shelter in U.N compounds in Juba and Bentiu are getting rations intended to last seven days. The World Food Programme is one of the organisations delivering the vital aid.

China’s food and drug watchdog has unveiled a revised regulation to tighten standards for domestic infant-formula producers.
It set new rules and raised requirements for infant-formula producers in nine aspects, including purchase of raw materials,formula product inspection, manufacturing process and production skills.
The regulation stipulates infant formula must adhere to medical science and nutritional standards. Producers are asked to use high quality fresh milk, and clearly label their products for different age levels. The quality of milk powder and the production process will be inspected under the same strict standards as for drug tests. Producers must also set up a system via which consumers can access all production information.
