Typhoon Kujira brings heavy rains to south China

According to China's National Meteorological Center, Typhoon Kujira has made landfall in northern Vietnam Wednesday morning, but its impact continues in the South China, bringing heavy winds and torrential rainfall. The typhoon made landfall in south China's Hainan Province on Monday evening, packing winds of up to 90 kilometers per hour, and then moved north.
Forecasts say downpours will hit parts of Yunnan and Hainan provinces as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. And the Center has already issued a yellow alert, the second highest level for heavy rain. Torrential rain is expected to continue in other provinces such as Sichuan, Shaanxi, Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang from Wednesday to Thursday afternoon.
Houses toppled. Roads collapsed. Bridges damaged. And a city flooded with muddy water.
This is what happened in Lin'an city in east China's Zhejiang Province, after it was lashed by continuous rain which began Tuesday afternoon. Rainfall in the city's Changhua Township reached one-story high in just 6 hours. Nearly 4,000 citizens have already evacuated, and luckily, no casualties have been reported. Similar scenes were witnessed in Nanchang, the capital of south China's Jiangxi Province.
Because of the heavy rain, shops had to close and traffic was totally paralyzed.
"I woke up at 7'o clock in the morning, and then waited here for over 2 hours," Resident Zeng Zhaocai said.
Outside the urban area, the downpour has triggered a large scale landslide, trapping hundreds of tourists and lines of cars.
"Mud and rocks suddenly slid down when we got here at around 11 o'clock. I thought that the mud might be shallow, and that the cars could pass. But it turns out that the cars only sunk deeper and deeper into the mud."
East China's Anhui province was also drenched by the torrential rain.
Continuous rainfall has flooded the fields in villages and threatens the safety of local reservoirs.
"We report the water level every two hours, no matter if it is day or night. There will always be staff checking the safety here 24 hours a day, and we will report the problem in time," Wang Guohua, management staff of Lianchuan Reservoir, said.
According to the regional meteorological station, the rain is expected to last for the next three days
Local authorities say a contingency mechanism has been launched and relief work in the rain battered area is underway.
