Back now with our series of this week on women’s health. Tonight the question: there is no other way to ask it, can you be fat and fit at the same time. The answer may surprise a lot of women who wage a life long battle with their weight. Our story tonight, from our chief medical editor Doctor Nancy Snyderman.

Two women, both in their early fifties, one got a perfect bill of health from her cardiologist, but the other got a wake-up call and alert she has significant heart disease requiring emergency surgery. Miami cardiologist Arthur Agatston says how a woman looks and the familiar term body mass index or BMI can be very deceiving.

That described Attica Celia. Her BMI, the standard classification of fitness, had always been in the normal range, but her blood work told a different story.

“She was a little bit what we call normal weight obesity. Er, she had some metabolic problems, she had a high bad cholesterol.” But she had no warning of the extensive heart disease that eventually landed her in surgery, “Because I was thin, because I had never been sick.”

And though Melanie Fox might not look the idea of perfect health, her doctor says she is.

“Well, this is Melanie’s heart, and you say a young, healthy heart. Her cholesterol values which were usually very high in overweight people are in fact completely normal.”

Even with regular exercise, her BMI is 29.8, thirty is considered obese.

But BMI doesn’t distinguish the weight of dangerous body fat from fat free mass like muscle and bone. And that’s why most experts believe that more accurate measures of fitness should be used instead. Like measuring waist circumference, which for man should be less than 40 inches around and for women less than 35. So, is it possible to be fat but fit?

In the Philippines, a typhoon, approaching the north-eastern tip of the Philippines, has intensified further. The state weather agency has said the typhoon is expected to make landfall late afternoon or later this evening.
"We are expecting that in the late afternoon or evening, it will make landfall at Ana point, Cagayan. This typhoon has strengthened further, because the area where the typhoon is located has a lot of energ, it's fuelling it," said Aldczar Aurelio, meteorologist of Filipino State Weather Bureau Pagasa.
Typhoon Noul has been packing winds close to 200 kilometers per hour, as it slowly approaches the province of Cagayan. More than ten-thousand passengers and over one-thousand shipping vessels are left stranded in various ports of the country. Cebu Pacific Air cancelled at least six domestic flights to the north of the country.
Officials in these northern provinces have readied relief supplies, as they move people away from low-lying and flood-prone areas. Meanwhile, more than 11,000 residents were evacuated to temporary shelters in two towns near the volcano, Mount Bulusan, in central Philippines. An average of 20 typhoons hit the Philippines annually.

In China, torrential rain and thunderstorms have been pounding the southern and southwestern provinces, while mild to moderate rain will sweep across north China in the coming three days.
Rainstorms hit parts of the southern and eastern provinces of Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, and areas in southwest Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Areas in northwestern and northern China will also experience strong wind and temperature drops of up to 8 degrees Celsius. Specifically, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region will see temperature drops of up to 12 degrees Celsius this weekend to Monday night.
From Sunday to Monday, heavy rain or rainstorms will hit some parts of Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
