A series of powerful tornadoes brought death and destruction to southern and central parts of the United States. At least seven people were killed in Arkansas and Oklahoma as the storms hit on Sunday. Many more have been injured. These were the scenes in the Oklahoma town of Quapaw just over 300 kilometres east of Oklahoma City. Dozens of homes and other buildings have been destroyed. Trees and power lines have also been brought down. Search and rescue teams are sifting through the debris for anyone who might be trapped underneath. Tornadoes were also reported in parts of Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri where they caused damage but there've been no reports of injuries.

Pro-Russian activists rally in Donetsk as separatists seize TV station

As a raspy voice bellows over the loudspeaker, hundreds clap and sing along in Donetsk. They're gathered there to rally for an independence referendum, saying they want to leave Ukraine.

Brandishing shields, bats and guns, the masked men stood not far from some police officers who did not try to resist them. Separatists in Donetsk already control the regional governor's office and city hall.

Obama arrives in Philippines

U.S. President Barack Obama's arrival in the Philippines marks the last leg of his Asia tour. He flew into Manila as a new defence pact was being signed to allow more U.S. troops into the Philippines. Obama's week long visit to Asia is intended to reassure key U.S. allies Washington is serious about its promised strategic 'pivot' towards the region. Talks with Philippine President Benigno Aquino were expected to cover issues from trade and economy to security and defence. Peng Liyuan’s “Cathay” tulip debuts in Beijing

A new strain of tulip has made its debut at a flower show in a suburban area of Beijing. It was named by Peng Liyuan, the wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, during her visit to the Netherlands last month.
This purple tulip is called "Cathay".
Peng Liyuan was invited to name the tulip on March 23, 2014 in the Netherlands, when she visited an exhibition with her husband, and Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima. She also followed the Dutch tradition and poured a glass of champagne on the flower to bless it.
The new Cathay tulip is a strong and colourful flower that can be grown in a sustainable way.
The director of the company that cultivates the tulip says it was found 10 years ago, the only one of its kind among a field of purple tulips.
"'Cathay' is a unique type of parrot tulip. One of the major differences is that it has feathery leaf edges, and the petals are dark purple, which is quite rare to see," said the director of Apeldoorn Bloemballen Company, Jan-Karel Apeldoorn.
This special tulip has gained popularity in China, and Apeldoorn says he has been receiving orders from all over the country.
He says that although "Cathay" was bred 10 years ago, there are only about 10,000 "Cathay" seeds, most of which can only be used for breeding. He predicts that there are 2,000 - 3,000 seeds on the market.
"This special type of tulip only blooms outdoors in late April or early March in the Netherlands. Beijing is rather dry and less humid. It will be very difficult or impossible breed here, so we have three hundred tulips in cold storage at the International Flower Port, and they are being displayed in batches for visitors."
Although it is customary in the Netherlands to name new tulips after celebrities, Peng didn’t name the tulip after herself. "Cathay" is the old name of China in the Netherlands. In Chinese it translates as Guo Tai, meaning "prosperous country".
According to Hua Liming, former Chinese Ambassador to the Netherlands, Peng’s choice of name shows the cultural differences between China and the Western world. There have been many tulips named after wives of heads of state, such as Barbara Bush, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton - three former U.S. first ladies.

Millions of college students in China will be graduating in less than three months, including thousands who have been studying art and design. For years, Shanghai has been trying to help such students by setting up design shows and competitions.
Less than ten minutes before the start of a fashion show, Ma Yuru was still rehearsing with the models wearing her work... the so-called Shanghai-style cheongsam. She has been studying clothing design for six years and is about to get her master’s degree. She says her school’s annual fashion week can mean a lot for her future career.
Ma is one of hundreds of design majors the school is trying to help. Most want to find jobs in clothing design, and one university official says the school has been helping its students learn what the market wants.
Last year, about 3,000 college students graduated with degrees in art and design. But not many of them could find jobs related to what they had learned. So the Shanghai education commission is giving them some help.
At this exhibition in Pudong, hundreds of artworks from 17 local colleges are on display, ranging from clothing and jewelry to animation. And it’s more than just a show as the commission has invited nearly 130 companies to assess the work - a rare opportunity for students to showcase their designs for future employers.
China’s Ministry of Education says more than 7 million college students will graduate nationwide over the next few months. That’s nearly 300,000 more than last year. Among them will be more than 100,000 art and design students, whose major is the fifth most popular in China.
