From eastern Texas to the Carolinas, the US has been pelted with ice, sleet and snow, wreaking havoc in the south. Now the deadly winter storm is threatening to pummel the eastern seaboard. More than 350,000 people are without power in the south and thousands of flights have been cancelled because of ice and strong winds. Many have been left stranded as transport comes to a standstill. The roads are nearly deserted as drivers heed warnings to stay inside. At least nine deaths have already been blamed on the storm. Three of them were killed when an ambulance slid off an icy Texas road and caught fire. North Carolina and Virginia are bracing for up to 30 cm of snow. The National Weather Service said it was a storm of "historical proportions"....but history aside most kids are happy to take advantage of a snow day away from school.

11 killed in Karachi blast

At least 11 police officers and dozens of people were wounded in this attack in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi. An explosion ripped through two police vehicles in Razzaqabad, near a police training centre. Police cordoned off the site, as officials examined the wreckage, collecting debris for clues into who was responsible for the blast. There were more than 45 personnel on the bus on their way to resume duties. Ambulances moved the wounded to Jinnah hospital for emergency treatment.

At least 10 among the injured are in a critical condition. They have head, upper torso and limb injuries."

Pakistan has been plagued by sectarian, ethnic and political violence for years. This attack comes just days after gunmen tossed hand grenades into the house of a deceased police officer in Peshawar, killing nine.

Hurricane-force winds and pelting rain are battering parts of the UK, that is already struggline to cope with record floods.A pensioner died trying to shift a tree felled by powerful winds. Winds of up to 160 kmph caused damage and destruction on the roads in the northwest. A truck is blown over on a bridge. Here along Blackpool promenade, lamps and flagpoles swayed precariously. The highest alert level has been issued for winds in Wales and northwest England. That comes on top of 16 severe flood warnings already in place. Parts of southwest England have been submerged for weeks. Water swept through flood defences leaving properties and gardens flooded.

Since 2006, when Chinese mainland's Taobao first entered the Taiwan market, it has not only already become one of the most popular online shopping websites in Taiwan, but has also brought the two sides closer.
Everyday there are about 10,000 packages coming from Chinese mainland's Taobao to Taiwan with hundreds of thousands of online shoppers excited about their bargains and their latest shopping experience.
Callie Nien, a Taobao shopper, says, "I was stunned. Things were 3 to 7 US dollars on Taobao, but in Taiwan it would be 15 to 20 dollars. Taobao was like heaven!"
In particular, Taobao is attracting younger shoppers that may have previously chosen to shop in the smaller stores, now choosing to skip the middle men and go straight to Taobao.
Irene Shin, another fan of Taobao, says, "I buy often. I buy about 3-4 times a month and help my classmates to buy in bulk."
Since the people of Taiwan started shopping on Taobao in 2006, the revenues have increased rapidly. In 2013 Taobao sales in Taiwan were about 170 million US dollars, an increase of over 25 percent from the previous year.
Winni Liu, who works at E. Sun Bank, comments, "In the past, Taiwan people always had to pay people they knew on the Chinese mainland to buy for them and ship to them, or if they paid 3rd parties in China mainland, sometimes packages didn't arrive and Taobao really wanted to solve such problems."
Now that the problem of 3rd parties is solved, business is looking to get even better and that it actually might bring the two sides closer.
Liu also says, "More business interactions brings better understanding of the two sides. For example, Chinese mainlanders can try Taiwanese food by buying the food online and Taiwanese can buy more inexpensive products from the Chinese mainland and thereby bringing the two sides closer."
Another way some are saying that Taobao is bringing the two sides closer is in terms of the political ideology of unification is that shoppers have to click that Taiwan is a province of China on their shipping address as they check out.
Whether or not Taobao is bringing both sides closer, one thing is sure. It is an example of Taiwan being more open to Chinese mainland businesses and one that Taiwan shoppers are benefitting from.

Toyota recalls 1.9 mln Prius cars worldwide

Toyota said Wednesday that it’s recalling 1.9 million of its Prius hybrid cars around the world.
The recall comes because of a problem that could cause the car to suddenly slow down. Toyota says there’s a glitch in software used to control one of the car’s power converters. The glitch could cause the car to enter a "fail-safe mode" and lose much of its engine power. Toyota says it’s aware of the defect in more than 400 vehicles, including 300 in Japan and 90 in North America. No accidents had been reported yet because of the defect.
