While the Russian 2014 Winter Olympics went off with a bang -- It didn't all go off without a hitch. One of the Olympic rings didn't light up during the opening ceremony. But that didn't stop nearly 40,000 spectators from enjoying themselves. This South African Olympic-attending veteran loved it.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) OLYMPIC CEREMONY AUDIENCE MEMBER, FROM SOUTH AFRICA PHIL GUTCHE, SAYING: "I also think the final torch, lighting of the torch was, again, spectacular. We've been to a number of Olympics, and this is really one of the greatest. They did a great job."
Meanwhile, journalists covering the games were quick to take to Twitter with their accommodation woes. A journalist from the Toronto Star tweeted this picture with the caption,"In my Sochi hotel. You're welcome to pop by and sit forlornly in my Chairs of Desolation."
While Russian President Vladimir Putin says homosexuals won't be discriminated against at the Games -- despite the country's ban on "homosexual propaganda" -- Ten gay rights protesters in Moscow's red square were arrested for waving rainbow flags. And despite numerous reports of a potential security threat, the Games appear to have had a relatively smooth start.

Violence spreads in Bosnia
It's the worst civil unrest since the end of the 1995 war. Demonstrators across Bosnia set fire to government buildings and fight with riot police. Here in Zenica -- in the Croat-Muslim Bosniak half of the country -- protests are largely contained but gaining intensity. But across the country hundreds of people have been injured in three days of protests over high unemployment. It began in the northern town of Tuzla with protests over the closure of factories, that had employed most of the local population....then quickly spread. In the capital Sarajevo police used rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannon to quell the violence. Protesters are demanding the government resign because of what they say is the inability of politicians to tackle the country's problems. About 40% of Bosnians are unemployed.
U.N. aid convoy attacked in Syria's besieged Homs
An aid convoy comes under fire in the besieged Syrian city of Homs. It happened late Saturday when mortar fire and gunshots hit the convoy of at least nine trucks. They were from the United Nations and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, on their way to a rebel held district to deliver food and medicine to civilians trapped in the fighting for months. Reuters can't independently verify this video, which was posted online and purports to be the aftermath of the attack. It's unclear who launched the attack. Both sides blame the other. Syrian TV said at least four aid workers were wounded. The attack violates a three-day ceasefire designed to get much-needed food and supplies inside Homs. It also threatens to unravel a humanitarian deal that included the evacuation of civilians. The deal had been the first concrete result of Syrian peace talks launched two weeks ago.

PC giant Lenovo's shares rose by more than one percent today on the back of news of Google’s massive investment in the company.
According to a disclosure on the Hong Kong stock exchange, Google will own a 5.94 percent stake in Lenovo valued at 750 million U.S. dollars as part of its recent acquisition of Motorola's handset division. Lenovo agreed last week to buy Motorola Mobility for 2.91 billion U.S. dollars in a cash and stock deal. Analysts say the agreement between Google and Lenovo ends the web giant's participation in the smartphone industry.

US unemployment falls, jobs growth weaker than expected
For a second straight month, weak jobs growth has raised concerns that the US economic recovery is losing momentum. But the jobs report the government issued Friday did offer some cause for optimism. The unemployment rate fell to 6.6 percent, the lowest in more than five years.
Markets gave the January jobs report the benefit of the doubt- moving higher as investors focused on added growth in areas like construction and manufacturing- indications the weather may not be hurting the economy as much as feared.
"I don’t think weather was a big factor in January. The reference week was actually slightly warmer than average and weather sensitive industries like construction showed strong growth." Council of Economic Advisors Chairman Jason Furman said.
While payrolls rose a weaker-than-expected 113,000. The rate of unemployment came in at 6.6 percent- just shy of the Fed’s 6.5 percent target to raise rates.
That pledge came more than a year ago- and they thought it would stay there until at least mid 2015. Fed Chair Janet Yellen now has to find a way to reassure investors rates will stay low- which presents a big problem, says Reuters columnist James Saft.
"Having embarked on tapering in December and carried through in January, they are just that little bit trapped. So the focus now moves to Yellen’s Humphrey-Hawkins testimony next Tuesday before Congress. For her then to give strong signs of being willing to reverse course now would be to give the appearance of panic and indecision. It would also probably be a bit of an overreaction and might even be more than she could deliver with the strong majority within the FOMC." Saft said.
And so Yellen will really have no choice but to stay the course when it comes to tapering.
"The decision to taper had as much a political element as an economic element to it, and I think if you take that as a lower bar, I think the current pace of private sector job creation of about 140,000 is just enough to keep tapering going on at its current pace. So no, this is not a game changer for Janet Yellen or the Fed." Decision Economics Cary Leahey said.
Many believe the Fed will try to avoid tying policy to specific targets going forward. In fact, Fed officials are talking about reformulating their forward guidance- a move that could come as soon as a Fed policy setting meeting on March 18th and 19th.
