U.S. Senator John McCain leads a delegation of fellow senators to Kiev, Friday. They visit the street where dozens were killed by sniper fire last month. The lawmakers laid flowers at one of the many memorials to the fallen. This comes as Crimea's pro-Russia parliament has scheduled a referendum on Sunday to decide whether the region should be annexed by Russia. The senators later met with Ukraine's newly-installed leaders where acting president Oleksander Turchinov praises McCain's efforts.

McCain traveled to Kiev in December when he addressed demonstrators whose protests helped lead to the ouster of former President Viktor Yanukovich.
Anti-World Cup protests in Brazil
Another one of many protests in Brazil against this year's world football cup. In this rally in Sao Paulo around 1,500 people took to the street to complain about the costs of staging the tournament. They marched through the city centre chanting: "There will be no Cup". Brazil has witnessed months of protests against the estimated $11 billion price-tag for the world cup. These demonstrators say the money would have been better spent on improving poor public services.
(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) LAWYER, CESAR MONTEIRO, SAYING: "A World Cup is not our priority. Our priority is quality transportation, a system of quality universal health care, quality universal education. These are the demands of this protest in reality."
The demonstration was peaceful.... not surprising when the police outnumbered the protesters. Recent protests have been small but some have turned violent. Thursday's rally comes less than three months before the FIFA World cup kicks off in Sao Paulo on June 12th.

Amateur video, which cannot be independently verified by Reuters, appears to show Syrian rebels storming a battle-scarred government building in northwestern Idlib province. The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, a former al Qaeda affiliate, and competing insurgents have been fighting since the start of the year.

By midday on Thursday, eight Chinese ships and five helicopters had searched for the missing plane for over 100 hours, covering more than 45,000 square kilometers.
The China Maritime Search and Rescue Center said it had expanded its search area westward, almost doubling its initial area. Chinese merchant ships in the Strait of Malacca are also being asked to help with the search mission.
10 satellites are being used to provide information and technological support. The vessels will continue the search following the ocean currents in the Gulf of Thailand, until new orders are given.

Satellites "picked up signals" from missing plane
As the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 continues, sources close to the investigation told Reuters that shortly after the plane disappeared, communications satellites picked up faint electronic pulses. But they say the signals gave no information about where the plane was heading.
The system transmits such signals about once an hour. It remains unclear how many the plane sent after air traffic control lost track of it. The signals indicate that the aircraft’s maintenance troubleshooting systems were switched on and ready to communicate with satellites as needed.
But according to the sources, no data links were opened because the companies involved had not subscribed to that level of service. Boeing, which made the missing 777 airliner, and Rolls-Royce, which supplied its engines, have both declined to comment. Earlier, Malaysian officials denied reports the plane had continued to send technical data. They said there was no evidence it flew for hours after losing contact with air traffic controllers.
