Another day of massive demonstrations cripple the Thai capital Bangkok Tuesday. Anti-government protesters have blocked roads and intersections bringing the city to a virtual standstill. Demonstrators gathered outside several government offices and forced employees to leave early. Other government offices, including the central bank, were working from remote locations. The protesters want Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to step down. They have rejected snap elections called for early February saying the entire electoral system needs to be reformed. Yingluck spoke to media Tuesday to plead for compromise.

The turmoil is the latest chapter in an eight-year conflict pitting the Bangkok-based middle class and royalist establishment against the mostly poorer, rural supporters of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her brother, former prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Chinese doctor sentenced to death for selling infants

A gynaecologist in northwest China received a suspended death sentence Tuesday (January 14) for her role in selling babies to human traffickers. Chinese media said Zhang Shuxia convinced parents that their newborn babies had congenital defects, and persuaded them to give up the children. She would then sell the infants to a human trafficker. In all, she sold seven babies. Miraculously, six have been recovered and returned to their biological parents. Zhang admitted to the crime during her trial in December. She and five other suspects have been detained in connection with the case.

Retired police officer arrested after movie theater shooting

The Pasco County Sheriff's Department has identified the alleged shooter at a Florida movie theater Monday as 71-year-old Curtis Reeves, a retired Tampa police officer. Reeves was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after deputies say he shot a couple sitting in front of him at a showing of 'Lone Survivor ' after a dispute over texting. The man later died. The woman has non-life threatening injuries.

For the last two years, all train tickets in China have had to include the real name of the passenger to prevent scalping. But the system clearly isn’t working. Numerous pictures have been posted on the internet, showing railway tickets stamped with names that are obviously fake. And the passengers still managed to use them.
On Friday, a passenger posted photos of himself riding a train from Fuzhou to Fuzhou South Station with tickets bearing the names of Japanese cartoon characters. His prank undermined the multi-million yuan system designed to battle scalpers and prevent ticket hoarding during the 40-day Spring Festival travel season. Similar pranks followed, with one person claiming to be a meatball. Another used the name of a fictional kungfu master.
And one person even used the name of a steamed bun chain store which became an internet sensation after President Xi Jinping ate there earlier this month. Railway authorities have now given up printing names on tickets. In the future, however, the online ticket booking system will be connected to an police identity authentication database.

The South Sudan crisis is still ongoing. Delegates at the peace talks in Addis Ababa have again met face-to-face. Mediators say they have narrowed the gap between them. So far though, there's no deal.
For the past 11 days, the Sheraton in Addis has hosted these on-off peace talks. And by Monday, the hotel's focus had shifted to the visiting Japanese prime minister. So the South Sudanese were forced to meet on the dance floor of the hotel's night club.
The mediators remain optimistic. "We have harmonized the two papers from the two delegations and at the moment we are trying to thrash out any issues they may have," said Gen. Lazarus Sumbeiywo, an IGAD mediator.
One big obstacle remains Juba's detention of 11 political detainees.
South Sudan's president Salva Kiir has so far defied international pressure for their release. And his rebel counterpart, Riek Machar, has defied pressure to drop demands for their release. Both men look to have dug in, and even for their representatives at these talks, it is deeply frustrating.
Mediators here insist they are making progress. But so far there's no agreement even on common ground - let alone a ceasefire. These talks are now heading into a third week.
