Defence Minister Daoud Rajha, seen here, was killed in the attack at a meeting of ministers and security officials in Damascus, according to state TV. Assef Shawkat, Assad's brother in-law, was also killed, and Interior Minister Mohammad Ibrahim al-Shaar was among the wounded, state TV reported. The bombing took place on a fourth straight day of fighting in the capital, said to be seen here in amateur video that Reuters cannot independently verify mainly due to Syrian media restrictions. The Free Syrian Army and Liwa al-Islam, an Islamist rebel group, have both claimed responsibility for the explosion. One security source said the suicide bomber was a bodyguard assigned to Assad's inner circle. It was not clear whether Assad himself was present. TEXT:Thousands of people in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos are homeless after the city tore down a sprawling shanty town. Makoko slum was home to nearly 10,000 people who lived in shacks built on stilts over a lagoon. Distraught residents watched as officials used power saws and gasoline to remove their homes. One woman said her belongings were tossed into the water and her children had gone missing. Most of the residents said they were unprepared even though officials said they'd been given 72 hours to evacuate. Pascal Agosu, a university student, grew up here and said in tearing it down, the government showed a blatant disregard for human rights. TEXT:At the United Nations, Russia and China vetoed a Security Council resolution threatening sanctions on Syria. The plan also would extend a monitoring mission inside the country. Since then the regime has intensified its use of heavy weapons in population centers, including the use of artillery and helicopter gunships. More than 100 civilians are being killed every day. 【Turkey Appeals To Russia As Syrian Violence Spikes】
TEXT:Prime Minister Erdogan arrived in Moscow Wednesday just as the crisis in Syria took a violent new twist.
Gun battles raged across Damascus after a bomb attack at the National Security building killed and injured members of President Assad's inner circle.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has backed his Syrian ally throughout the crisis, blocking Western-sponsored resolutions at the U.N. condemning the Syrian government.
The conflict is raging near Turkey's border. Plumes of smoke could be seen Wednesday just a few kilometers into Syria. Ankara has sent reinforcements after one of its military jets was shot down by Syrian forces in June.
Prime Minister Erdogan attended the funeral of one of the pilots earlier this month.
A former ally of Syria, he is now one of its most vocal critics - calling the violence "the last footsteps of a regime on its way out."
Turkish foreign ministry spokesman Selcuk Unal is urging international cooperation to stop the violence.
"In the case of Syria every country has a different policy and on that there's a strong and long debate still ongoing. I think all countries should be encouraged to pay efforts to stop bloodshed in Syria," Unal said.
Unal said little has come from the peace plan put forward by U.N. envoy Kofi Annan.
"The international community should do more in the sense of increasing the political pressure on the Syrian administration. In that sense, we have supported, we support the efforts of Mr. Annan, but of course this should also bring something concrete," Unal said.
The West has heavily criticized Russia and China for blocking U.N. resolutions against Syria. But Turkey is playing a careful diplomatic game as both countries are valuable trading partners.
After the Damascus bombing, Kofi Annan asked the U.N. Security Council to delay a vote on a new resolution about Syria. Russia's position is seen as key.
Analysts say while the latest attack increases pressure on the five permanent Council members to find a way to end the violence, there are few signs that their differences can be overcome.

【For Smokers, Never Too Late to Quit; Diesel Exhaust and Cancer】

There is new medical evidence for the expression "better late than never." Researchers have found that smokers reduce their risk of dying from tobacco even if they stop smoking after the age of sixty.

Smoking is a known risk for many diseases, including many forms of cancer as well as heart disease. But most studies on the health effects of smoking involve middle-aged people.

The latest analysis by German researchers examined the findings of seventeen studies carried out in the United States, China, Australia, Japan, England, Spain and France.
