Walmart offers holiday deals early
Christmas right after Halloween? Sounds freaky, but Walmart jump started its holiday sales season nearly one month early, offering huge online discounts on 7 items and deals on 360 others. For example, it's chopping 40 percent off the price for a 42-inch JVC LED HDTV at under $300. Normally, U.S. retailers launch holiday sales on Thanksgiving in late November and the day after, and they set aside heavily discounted bait online for "Cyber Monday" on the Monday after Thanksgiving. But here's why retailers want to get a headstart this year: this holiday season offers six fewer shopping days than last year. And the economy is still sluggish, with consumer confidence falling last month amid the government shutdown. ShopperTrak forecasts the slowest growth in holiday sales in four years. So get set for big deals. Morgan Stanley predicts this will be the most promotional holiday season since 2008. Holiday shopping is prime time because retailers get the bulk of their annual revenue during this season that ends with Christmas. Walmart shoppers may be particularly hard hit. Many of its shoppers live paycheck to paycheck.

Golden Dawn pair shot in Athens
Greek police throng the area around the offices of the far-right Golden Dawn party where two of its supporters have been shot dead. A third was wounded in the drive-by attack on Friday. It happened on a busy street during the evening rush-hour in the capital, Athens. The shootings came at a time of growing public anger against Golden Dawn. Several of its senior members have been arrested over alleged involvement in attacks and criminal activities. The party is the subject of a government crackdown after the killing of a rapper in September blamed on one of its sympathisers. But lawmakers across the political spectrum are condemning Friday's attack. A Greek government spokesman pledged those behind it would be hunted down.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the shootings, which police said were carried out at close range with a nine millimetre pistol.

The furore over America’s international spying web continues to escalate, with a Spanish newspaper claiming tens of millions of phone calls in the country have been monitored by the U.S. National Security Agency.
It is the latest allegation after British newspaper, the Guardian, last Thursday reported the U.S. has monitored the phone calls of at least 35 world leaders - a spying row that has shaken the U.S.'s allies in Europe.
"I think it is wrong to spy on us. Spain and the U.S. are allies, They shouldn’t distrust us. The U.S. government must make a clear explanation, because this is serious."
"I think spying on people is totally wrong. The U.S. government should stop this. We are not criminals."
"It’s a scary situation, because it touches on our most intimate things, our privacy, our phone calls, our feelings, our daily lives - things we don’t want to tell the whole world about."
More scandals are revealed, almost daily.
Spanish newspaper El Mundo on Monday published a front page article claiming the NSA tracked 60 million phone calls, messages and emails of Spanish residents in a month, for the period between December 2012 and January 2013.
"We don’t accept the U.S. taking anti-terrorism as an excuse to spy on our citizens. We don’t believe there are so many terrorists the NSA has to check 60 million calls in a month," said Inaki Gil, deputy director of El Mundo.
Meanwhile, a U.S. website, Cryptome, also says during the same period, 46 million calls were checked in Italy, 361 million in Germany, and more.
However, the NSA head denied all the accusations at a recent hearing.
The NSA is also reported to have monitored the phone calls of at least 35 world leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
During last month’s EU summit in Belgium, delegations from Germany and France both announced they would send officials to talk with the White House and the National Security Agency about the issue.
"We said that Germany and France will not turn to America as Germany plus France, but that every country on its own will get in touch with the American security services and will work on a future framework for cooperation. Of course we will exchange thoughts on this," Merkel said.
The U.S. spying scandal has escalated since former NSA contractor Edward Snowden fled the country and released NSA documents in June this year.

Germany’s Interior Minister says his country would like to talk to Edward Snowden if he is willing to help shed light on the US spying scandal.
Hans-Peter Friedrichhe said he would try to find a way for Edward Snowden to speak to German officials. His comments came after a German opposition lawmaker travelled to Moscow where he met the NSA whistleblower.
The lawmaker, Hans-Christian Stroebele told the press that it was clear Snowden knew a lot, and returned to Berlin with a letter he said Snowden had written.
In the letter Snowden indicated that he would not speak with German officials until the United States stops its prosecution of whistleblowers.
