On day seven of the government shutdown, President Barack Obama made a surprise visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He thanked furloughed FEMA workers who were called back to the job this weekend to respond to Tropical Storm Karen.

The call for action comes as the U.S. approaches its deadline to raise the debt ceiling. If Congress cannot reach a compromise, the country would default on its debt. Obama blames Republicans for playing games with budget negotiations. But Speaker Boehner says it's the President who's unwilling to budge.

Hope grows slim for recovering bodies from migrant ship wreck

As divers search the remains of this wrecked vessel, the hope for finding more bodies grows grim. So far nearly 200 bodies have been recovered from the boat, which was carrying around 500 African migrants. One diver involved in the search says the outlook is not optimistic.

Weather authorities have issued a yellow warning for the heavy smog, as it also plagues other parts like Beijng, Tianjin and Henan.
This year, the thick and hazardous smog has affected 17 provinces and municipalities. Facing this lingering crisis, China plans to build a nation-wide network within three to five years to monitor the impact of air pollution on health.

The Yangcheng Lake crabs are very popular as they are considered a luxurious delicacy. A crab of this size weighing about 250 grams, costs more than one hundred yuan. But they may represent the blurring of the line between a present and a bribe.
Wang Bing, a Yangcheng Lake crab store branch manager in Beijing, told me that orders are lower than previous years.
Meanwhile, some of the high end restaurants are trying to make their traditional "crab feasts" affordable for ordinary people by offering less expensive versions of dishes.
Many say they would like to live a frugal lifestyle for the festivals and holidays.
China’s central leadership is quite determined to fight corruption, curbing extravagance nearly in every corner of the society. Even in Tian’anmen square, holiday flowers have been streamlined. But a lot still needs to be done to make a clean government.
