Soon afterwards, a distinct smell reportedly began wafting from the facility. China, the world's second-largest economy, has a poor record when it comes to workplace safety. In June alone, 120 people died when a fire engulfed a chicken processing plant in north-eastern Jilin province.

Anti-war protesters have gathered in cities across the UK, Germany, and France, at the possibility of US military action against Syria.
Hundreds of anti-war protesters rally in central London to demand no military intervention in Syria. They marched from the House of Parliament to Trafalgar Square chanting "No USA Attack" and "Hands Off Syria" in a peaceful rally.
In Germany’s financial capital Frankfurt, several hundred supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad marched in the streets. They waved Syrian flags and displayed photographs of Assad. People in France have also voiced their opposition against military action on Syria. A recent poll shows 64 percent of respondents opposed military action, 58 percent did not trust President Francois Hollande to conduct it, and 35 percent feared it could "set the entire region ablaze".

The China Enterprise Confederation has released its latest Top 500 Enterprises list, with Sinopec Group topping the list by revenue for the third straight year. The list says Sinopec’s revenue reached 2.83 trillion yuan, and the total assets of the 500 enterprises have reached more than 150 trillion yuan.
The top ten enterprises this year are from the energy, banking, communications, and construction sectors.
In 2013, the Top 500 Enterprises contributed nearly 3.6 trillion yuan in taxes, an increase of 11 percent compared with last year.
Meanwhile, more than 120 companies have a revenue of more than 100 billion yuan each. 86 of them also rank on the Global 500 list.
The list also shows that state-owned and state-controlled companies play a dominant role in contributing taxes. But, private enterprises surpass state companies in terms of net profits.
